rear 3rd member replacement

my 3rd member is leaking and i was gonna replace it but was wondering if i can just replace it or do i need anything else i think there stock 4:10s but dont know for sure need some help

Where is it leaking exactly? It's a bit cheaper to put in a new pinion seal and FIPG on the housing versus just replacing it. And you will still have to at least do FIPG on it if you replace the whole thing.

you want to replace it just because it's leaking? Or do you know it's bad? Its very simple. Drain the oil from the plug on the bottome. Remove wheels and undo the brake lines and E brake cable(use a clamp on the soft line up by the valve on the frame I think) On the backside of the dust sheild of the drum brake assembly you will have 4 14mm bolts undo those and they will pull out. You only need to pull em out like 6 inches or so so they'll pop out of the diff. It won't hurt to replace the press in seal on the axle housing, under 15 bucks at your favorite auto parts store. Check the rear bearings also, they're the sealed type, so I'm not really sure how to tell if they're bad. I just replaced them because they were cheap and I worked for NAPA at the time. If you're gunna replace them, then go get NAPA's Altrom brand they are the actual OEM bearings for cheap. I believe the brand is KOYO. The part number is 936. Removing the rear diff is pretty simple. Disconnect the drive shaft at the diff(4 14mm nuts and bolts). your have about 10? nuts holding the diff into the housing now. I can't remember if they're 10 or 12mm. The rear diff IS VERY HEAVY. I could barely do it by myself. I used a jack and my roll around creaper for it to fall on. Dont let it fall or you or your hands or concrete. It will hurt, or it will chip a tooth on the ring gear. Don't bother with a paper gasket. Toyota doesn't use one. Get gear oil silicone. Gear oil is harsher than harsher than coolant and oil, so I don't ever use just regular black or grey silicone. The napa part number for gear oil silicone is 765-1654 I think. It's sometimes not displayed witht he regular silicones, but any counter guy that's not a highschool drop out will be able to find it for you in the back or in a catalog. Any questions PM me or respond here! I kept getting my back lash wrong and had to remove and install mine about 3 times, then a couple months later a 4th time to install my Aussie locker, lol

If you want to find out your axle ratio there is sometimes a plate in the engine compartment with the axle code. I believe 4.10's is a code of G0292. It will have some numbers before and after it I think, like a transmission code of like W56-C and stuff. My plate was by the back of the valve cover I think. If it's leaking at the pinion seal(right were the driveshaft is connected to the 3rd member's flange) it's not very hard either. You'll have a 30mm staked nut IIRC. Undo that and the seal should pop out with a seal remover. I believe you have to make sure you install the nut again the same amount of torque or turns. I think a website gear installs does a couple write ups on it. google it. I can't remember his exact name, lol. eventhough he rebuilt a 3rd member or a couple years ago. He's out of arizona...

Sry guys my bad looked a little closer n its just a rear diff seal leak so thank god its not that bad

FIPG is Toyota gasket making silicone. Form-In-Place-Gasket.

Permatex Ultra Black or Grey is great stuff as well. Available at any parts stores.
