is it possible i've lost L4?

No syncromesh in the t-case. That is why it is tricky to shift while moving.

Usually no need to clutch in while shifting 2H<->4H. Best if stopped to shift between 4H<->4L, either in neutral or with clutch in w/ engine running.

Try rolling slowly backwards or foward slowly as try engaging 4low. might be easier to learn how to use the 4h and 4l feature without the hubs locked. All the means is the tranfers case will send power to the front axle but wont send the power to the front wheels so it can make it easier to play with the transfer case
