Pinion bearing goin bad?
Heras the deal with my problem.. Its a 84 xtra cab with 5.29 gears in 4wd amd 2wd in first gear -2nd gear it makes this scraping noise pretty bad especially then doin a lil light 4wheelin or gettin on the gas around town! Its the worse when its in the lowest gears and goes away while you upshift and nuttin at all when your off the gas!!????!? my U joints seem fine they are all greased up and tight? my manuel says it could be the Pinion bearing could this be right if so how could i check? how hard to replace? what about a axle bearing??
Thanks fellas

What about in Reverse?
If it does not do it in reverse it is probably not a bearing. Reverse usually aligns the R&P with each other resulting in a better mesh. The forward gears tend to exagerate a bad setup since the torque applied wants to "walk" the pinion up the ring.
A dying bearing is usually depicted by a howling, whirring noise that varies with throttle input.
It may be improperly set up gears. Were the 5.29's recently installed? Were the bearings replaced?
How does the lube look, badly wearing gears are easily recgonized by a glittery tint to the drained 80-90w. If you don't want to drain the oil simply fish a magnet inside the fill hole and see what you come up with--big chunks indicate big trouble.

Usually you can check the pinion flange by hand. Park and block the wheels, tranny in neutral, t-case in 2H, and grab the pinion flange. Push side-side or up-down feeling for any play, should be none felt. It usually gets loose and starts to wear, getting looser over time.

I had a very similar problem a few weeks ago. I thought all my joints were good underneith until i unbolted the rear driveshaft from the transmission and tried to move the back ujoint. when i did the awful squeakin/scraping noise came back. Replaced the Ujoint and it went away. The bad one was full of grease, but two of the legs of the t part were dry and rusty. $50 for a new one at toyota and installed it myself.
