Oil pump didn’t prime

I replaced timing chain and oil pump on 22re. But pump didn’t prime. Started to knock o I shut it off immediately. I got oil pump primed. Now it has a slight knock. Cv joint boots are torn on both sides. So when I pull both cv joints should I drop differential and replace rod bearings. All 4 cylinders have 170 compression.
What do y’all think

I wonder why it wouldn't prime. That seems very suspicious.
I would definitely at least inspect the rod bearings while you have the opportunity.
if you have a knock, you can isolate the piston or rod by pulling spark to that cylinder while its running.
Also, exhaust leaks can sometimes be mistaken for a knock.

Did your forget to pack the pump (vasoline or molylube), or forget to pull the EFI fuse for the initial engine cranking to verify oil pressure? These are the typical safeguards against dry firing an engine.

Yeah your are going to want to pull the oil pan and inspect the bearings and rotating assembly if you believe it was not pumping oil. Keep track of what comes out of where in the event you don't find any scoring or debris, but expect the worst and have you micro caliper and stuff ready to take some measurements at least.

I have worked on Chevy and my big trucks for 35 years never TOYOTA. So no I didn’t do any of the thing I should have done. Didn’t know. But I have read so much about them now my brain hurts. I dropped the oil pan the next morning after it started the noises. There was nothing in the oil or the pan or the filter. I’ll pull the pan and let y’all know.
