oil pressure problem

got a 85 4runner that PO rebulit the 22re. the problem is that there is no oil pressure when u start it after it has sat for a little bit. but once it does get pressure it works great. i have put in new oil pump and checked oil pickup and it good. only thing i can think of is the oil is all flowing back to the pan. i use napa gold oil fliter, 10-40 oil and a bottle of lucas oil stabilizer. any thoughts?

A friend of mine had trouble with the napa gold filters being half empty on his Cummins,so he switch to case filters. I had trouble with a wix which is the same filter as the napa gold .my problem was a rattle at start up from the chain tensioner, by changing to a toyota filter the rattle went away.

my 92 22re shows no oil pressure at startup, takes a second before it picks up, bone stock 210,000miles did t chain at 200000. . . . . use fram tg or mobil one filter if its on sale (cause i will only run mobil one sythetic). i dont think its anything to worry about. . . . notice that thats not a very fast moving gauge anyway. could be lagging

ya i know the gauge is slow. and i know the only press in none at start up do to i had a mech gauge under the hood. but i blocked it off because i thought it might b letting air into the block to let the oilf flow down.

the main thing is that i can hear the head and what sounds like a real bad rod knock when i start the truck. but i can also hear it go away before the gauge moves. and in the cold mornings it sometimes will take 5 mins to build any press but as soon as it does its good to go. but that will b the real test tomorrow when i go to work

The crank in my '85 22re was ground a few thousandths too small and has such low oil pressure that the tensioner cannot effectively do it's job and because of that the engine misses like hell. I have been told that on occasion that the relief valve in the oil pump will get caught up and allow oil to flow back to the crankcase. I may have the latter problem which I hope but will only know after checking my pump. I have exactly the same problem as you upon startup and i'm running pretty thick oil. Chain rattles and I get a nasty knock. I found a good, used 22r bottom end which I will be using shortly.
