No power and overheating

I have an 85 ext. cab 5spd. it has 31X10.50 Buckshots on it. the problem is the severe lack of power. I bought the truck and drove it for a while and just assumed it was the weak 22re. but recently my buddy bought a 85 runner. well needless to say that when i drove it, it was like driving a corvette compared to mine. I don't understand. it has 31X10.50's just like mine. Also here recently it has wanted to start overheating on the interstate. It has been triple degree heat indeces for the past 2 weeks or so but i would think it should be able to keep up. I have to slow down to about 45 to make it drop back down. I checked the timing the other night and for it to run "right" it had to be like 30 degrees out instead of 5 like its supposed to be. so i pulled the valve cover off and set the motor at TDC and the timing chain is dead on. I have also replaced the plugs, air filter, dist. cap and rotor. anybody have any magical toyota wisdom to pass my way? im sick of gettin passed on the interstate by 90 year old grandmas

For the power problem try replacing the fuel pump. I had this problem recently as well. Lanes would start merging and I would step on it and get left behind by old ladies... not anymore. Also try replacing the fuel filter and cleaning your injectors. Another thing is that your friends yota could have been regeared at some point in time. You might as well clean the throttle body as well. For the overheat, as stupid as this sounds, check to make sure your radiator is full, it could also be the thermostat. Your fan clutch might be bad as well.

you might be going through what happened to me, it didn't have much power when i bought it but i drove it and it was fine then it started over heating, so i changed the therm and plugs and wires, still over heated then went back to normal over and over again then it lost it all, no power, oil and antifreeze mix

most everyone has told me it was either the head gasket or the timing chain eat a hole in the cover

If you can check compression, do it. That's what most people are leaning towards here...head gasket. That could cause all those problems. Could be a bunch of little stuff, though.

search the forums or even google
... search how to set the timing properly.
... you could even use the google qualifier "site:www.yotatech.com" to restrict results to yotatech

given that you're saying 30 degrees helps it run tells me you don't know how to set it. you have a 22re? you put the jumper in, no?

The power part is probably bad rings. Mine is the same way only no overheating. I did a compression check and the needle chugs up higher and higher with each turn of the crank indicating bad rings. Time to overhaul and since I have not seen an 84 22r CARBURATED motor being rebuilt in these forums I figured I would document mine then upload what I could.

No i do know how to set timing, I have the FSM and a chilton's. jumper the wire, hooked up timing light and adjusted idle and timing for an hour and that was the best it would do. at 5* it runs but will not pull it self out of the garage. I have searched this forum up and down. I know how the members of this site get agitated about redundant threads.

The distributor could be off 1 tooth, or more. You can pull it out and rotate it slightly, then try it again.

Yeah if the timing needs to be that advanced to run, then I would think that either the timing chain is off a tooth, or the distributer is off a tooth, like the two above posts say.

If you think people get agitated here, check out some of the other sites! People are very nice here. You'll notice yourself, if you stick around long enough, that the questions that can be answered by a simple google search, or by just opening the hood of your truck, tend to annoy people. Not saying that's what you're doing, just explaining. At some point you'll see a thread asking "will these tires fit my truck?" and your blood pressure will elevate a bit...

After I changed the head gasket on mine, I had all sorts of running problems. Some were vac lines hooked up to the wrong ports, and vacuum leaks. The other problem at first was the distributor was off 1 tooth. I have fixed all of those problems, cleaned the throttle body and IAC, and adjusted the TPS. Its running great now, other then a slight header leak due to a stripped stud.
