Nice! That thing will go plenty of places stock once you get it running to your satisfaction. We have a pretty good AZ group here if you haven't already seen it- https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f66/

For online FSM's try this
http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showfl...5&o=14&fpart=1

That link includes this one which I really like for ease of use. Though it doesn't have everything for the older trucks, it covers most of it.

Another very useful link for straight axle owners

Good luck and welcome

Yeah I second getting the heavy duty inner axle seal from marlin crawler, I just put mine in, and they are sooooooooooo much nicer than the stock ones, and they're still only like 7 bucks a pop, that's pocket change in the off roading world.

I would try to swap to a 22re if I could. There is a bit more of a diffrence than just being fuel injected, the 22r has a higher deck hight, dish top pistons, and a lower comp head just to name a few. The re will get you a bit more power and do it with a little less fuel. I AM NOT KICKING THE 22R........I love them........I just have more love for the re.

Sorry dude you are wrong.
the only diff in teh laser block 22r and 22re is the intake/carb.
You are thinking of the pre-85 22r which came in the 1st gen trucks.
To make your 22r a 22re, you need quite a few parts incl intake mani, harness, computer, etc.
I say get the carb running well, and be done with it. stock carb works best for offroad.

DrTrev, i'll def spring for the upgrades. 7 bucks is change in the big picture.

BLKnBLU thanks for the links. i DL'd them all. Will b very useful for sure. I'll let ya know when she's running and you can hook me up with the trails.

jsn, I've already looked into the swap (just out of curiosity) and the only dif is the fuel system. There is a girl on here who did the swap. She's got some pics of it all.

For now I'll stay carbed. Easy to get through emissions. I'll see how far I can get carbed for now.

This Link: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/index.html has got a 58MB downloadable Factory Service Manual that will cover 85-94 Trucks with 22R and 22RE.

Nice score on the truck!

Hey guys. Update on this beast.
I changed out all the fluid, plugs wires and filters (oil, fuel, air). I got a battery hooked up and installed new terminals on the battery wires. I also replaced the pass. headlight with the proper size lamp.

She fired up and ran pretty good and the AC works!!! There was no drive train issues. The clutch is a little slopy, and I found an oil leak behind the main pulley.

I've been trying to get that damn bolt off but it wont budge. I broke a ratchet and a cro-bar!!! It's at my buddy's shop so hopefully they'll be able to knock that off for me today.

I imagine it's just one little seal back there, right? Anything to look out for once I finally get behind the main pulley?

Also in the works: In the process of installing a new ignition cylindar, and trying to find some stock seats.

check the seal surface on the crank pully for a groove worn into it. It could cause the new seal to leak. Cover sleeves should be availible from a local auto parts store.

you are retarded! The early version 22Rs DID have a taller deck, yada yada yada BUT the 85 has the SAME block as your 22RE does. Dont bother with the conversion. If you DO have the dome pistons, you have a higher compression ratio than the new (after 84) 22Rs. Plus, get your self a Weber conversion kit. you wont be dissatisfied. I recommend the 38DGES.

Your 22R will probably need the standard timing chain repairs,as every used toyota 22R does. If you are running the carb setup, pull your engine and rebuild it when you do the weber conversion kit. Its a lot easier to get it all figured out outside of the truck and then install it as one assembly(WHICH IS POSSIBLE WITH THE CARB. 22Rs and not the Fuel Injection!)You can drop in the engine all assembled with most accessories and wiring in place, not something that is possible with the 22RE.

well, I couldn't get the main pulley bolt off , so i took it to a local shop. They are booty raping me for a $10 seal and one rusty bolt, but I gotta get it off!!

Oh well. She is drivable now.
I will be getting the ignition cylidar set up and looking for seats/other little odds and ends to clean her up.

The shop gave me a little break on the price and showed me the busted seal. The seal looked BRAND NEW, except a pinch where the oil was seeping through. It looks like someone bought a new seal then installed incorrectly.

I drove it to work today, and ya'll were right, this thing is slow. It's a nice ride tho, easy to see all around me. Hopefully the junk yard will have some little odds and ends for me this weekend.
