I upgraded from the stock cluster in my dlx 4runner to a SR5 with tach. I was suprised to see i never go above 3000rpm. My belt will squeek/slip when i go above that and the engine feels like its reving a whole lot higher. If i had purchased a V6 gauge cluster for my 22re would my rpms indicate lower than actual? im running 33's with 5.29 gears, so if someone running the same setup could give me some reference of speed and gear vs. rpm to see if the tach is registering right, that would be best. Thanks

 

gears and tire size don't matter to the tach..
If you purchased an SR5 cluster from a V6 rig, then you'd have a problem like this.
Theres a fix on here if you search.

 

lol problem there is the tach is set up for a v6.. your a Inline 4 cylinder.

Is there any marking on the cluster that would indicate wether its a V6 or I4 cluster. The guy i bought it off of "said" it came from a 22re.... can someone give me reference for what rpms to expect in 5th gear? im going off of memory but it was looking like 35mph was 1000ish and 75 mph was 2300.

 

sounds about right, but in a way to reply both, if its from a v6 then its gonna be out of wack, im not sure if there is a way to indicate whether its a 6 or a 4

 

check the back of the gauge set, thinking that the 6 cyclinder should show this



and 4 cyclinder should show

 

I been reading about the potentiometer mod. Some questions arise. First, it seems that a pot is used when the cluster was meant for less cylinders than the engine has (i.e. V6 cluster for a V8 motor, or 22re cluster for a V6). Does this work the other way, as in can i correct my tachometer from a V6 for my 22re? Next question, is there an onboard potentiometer or do I have to buy one? If its dependant on year, how can I tell? (guy i bought the gauge cluster from said its for a 4 cylinder, but its for a V6 so there is no way telling what year it is from based on what he said. Thanks in advance.

 

You can also take off the clear face and black fascia, and it will say V6 on the face of the gauge in the corner of the tach

 

when i pull it apart to either adjust or add the pot i will check it. Do you know if there is an adjustable potentiometer on the cluster?

thanks herpestes. that helps alot. My next question is something i've struggled to find, a chart comparing speed in a gear and the corresponding RPM. Using a calculator and other info i found i believe these to be accurate:

1st gear 10mph = 1911rpm
1st gear 15mph = 2867rpm
2nd gear 20mph = 2070rpm
3rd gear 30mph = 2007rpm
4th gear 45mph = 2175rpm
5th gear 60mph = 2465rpm
5th gear 70mph = 2876rpm

if someone could please confirm or correct me that would be awesome.... getting closer everyday to having an accurate tach.

does the tach face that you are trying to correct have the checker board pattern?

 

no checkerboard, just horizontal lines going through the backdrop.

bump for more information, guidance. I know people can take a V6 cluster to a V8 and add a potentiometer and make it right. What about a V6 cluster to the 22re, how would that be "fixed"?

 

no.......just that i had a spare gauge set that has the checker board pattern that came from a 4 banger. if you remove the speedo from the gauge set you will see the potentiometer from the side. the potentiometer should be white in color and have the phillips screw head. take a tune up tach and start up your engine and use that to adjust the factory tach.
