Need some help with my engine.

I have a 84 4x4 thats at 290,xxx miles now. Very tired. With my tuning it up it is still blowing white/grey smoke. Had been sitting for 3 years or so.
So far I have done: Rebuilt the carb, fresh oil change, pressure check (155 on all 4), and tuned the carb and timing.
Plugs are soot fouled and I have cleaned those up but haven't replaced them yet. Gaps are perfect. Wires test good. K&N air filter thats doing great still.
So there is white/grey smoke coming out from idle on up. Excess water coming from the tailpipe and soot. All my vacuum lines are good and in the right places. Idles great and sounds good. I haven't adjusted the valves on it yet.
So need some advice on what can be causing it. My thoughts are that it is running rich and burning some oil. Not sure though.
Thanks for the help!

It is a very tired faithful engine in there. Will get fresh plugs tomorrow. Adjusting the valves and replacing the head gasket will be next on the list then. $24 from NAPA for it. Cheap enough.

I don't want to get into a full rebuild myself. I don't have the space for it or the funds. If it is going to get rebuilt will need some help or will have a shop do it. Found a shop that is $1800 for a full turn key putting in a remanufactured engine. I don't really want to go that route as My engine would be getting replaced. http://www.mjmengines.net/ is the shop.

Well, I talked with my uncle who has been a mechanic among other things in his life and he says that I should replace the valve stem seals. From everything I have read it isn't all that easy of a job and while I'm at it I should just have the head rebuilt for me with new parts and at the same time replace my timing chain, guides, and oil pump.

Replaced the plugs and that fixed the cold smoke. Now when it gets up to temp it blows blue smoke. Oil. Darn. Was hoping it wasn't that. So, now it looks like a full rebuild is on the way or a replacement engine. Been talking to MJM Engines some more and might be getting a deal on them doing the full replacement and all that. Bartering is the way to go if ya can! Going to go check out their shop next week sometime and talk face to face with the owner. $1800 is a lot of money to me. But new truck that will be reliable again and take me everywhere I want to go. Sounds like a deal to me.

Alright. After a good amount of reading I will be rebuilding the engine myself and dropping in a new head. All parts from engnbldr. Replace all my vacuum lines and anything else I can think to replace that with improve my trucks reliability. Will see if I can get a hold of a decent camera and take pictures the entire process. Now to scrape up the cash for all the goodies
