I have a brake booster and master cylinder off of a 95 4Runner on my 86 4Runner and it made a nice difference in braking. If i remember right the master cylinder on later model trucks and 4Runners have a larger bore, (I think its a one inch bore) that will improve braking.

good info here, and there's a great writeup from EricB on all the variations he's tried. I learned a ton from these threads before doing my brake swap on my 84. Of course it brakes great, but runs like crap now so I can't even enjoy them.

I put in the MC and BB from a 95 4runner.

I pulled the MC and Booster as one piece from a 4runner at the junk yard. Most of the yard should have plenty of them thanks to cash for clunkers.

The MC is the 1" bore and the booster is a dual diaphragm.

I had the same problem with my 85. With the bigger rear axles and brakes off an 87, the MC just couldnt keep up. I ended up using an adjustable proportioning valve from jegs to replace the load adjusting factory one and a 1" bore MC. Braking is great now.
