major carb issues

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum. Not new to cars but pretty new to toyotas. I bought an 85 4x4 standard cab and it ran great. Soon after....3 days.....it began runnin like crap and would not idle or start warm. After4 a lot of head scratchin and lookin and listenin I decided the carb was bad. As I could see and hear fuel pouring into the engine after every shut off. Explains why the warm sttart up was impossible. (Flooding) ordered a new carb as everything that can go wrong with a carb did on my stocker. I did order another stock carb after mounds of research. Got the new carb on and it fired right away but still would not idle. So upsetting. About 15 minutes of adjusting and tweaking and got no better. Smoke started to billow out of my tailpipe and oil spewed out of my pcv valve and breather on my valve cover. Worried about rings bein gone in it and not wanting to start low on oil I checked my oil as I have at least 10 times since the purchase of the truck. To my amazement it was at least three inches past the F on my dipstick and smelled like gas. An oil change, new plugs and start up cured it. Runs great.more power better gas milage as well. From what I gather the fuel pouring into the engine on shut down worked its way to the oil pan. Raised the level and thinned the oil enough to cause some pretty serious blow by. All is well now and should continue to be. Check oil everyday just to be sure. I hope that some how this will help some one along the way. I was lucky I stopped drivin it as soon as it would not idle as to not do more damage. Hours of searching and found nothing close to the issue I was halving...lots of similar symptoms but none about the gas workin down to the pan. Figuerd I would post and help someone out if I could.

I got the carb from import carbs online. The total cost to my door with basic ship[GVIDEO][/GVIDEO]ping and gaskets was $246. Got it in 5 days. They do not charge a core fee right away. Instead, they send a ups lable and allow you 14 days from delivery date to ship it back before a fee is charged. Great company I highly recomend them. And I am so glad I caught it before some major damage took place. Truck is still runnin like a dream. I love my toyota!

A side note.....the high oil level due to the gas was the reason it would not idle. If you think about it, you can run pretty fast in an inch of water....not so easy in a foot of water. Same scenerio with my crank more than likely submerged in oil.

Thanks for the tip on the carb company. I'll give it a shot since it's a lot less work/expense than converting my '85 to EFI.

The main problem with the weber is the fact that most are not emissions compliant in that your EGR and PAIR systems are disabled.

Even where I am at even though they do not have smog testing, there is still visual emissions checks that are done as a part of the state's safety inspections.

So the Weber isn't for just anyone. And is one of the main problems with mine. As well as it takes some knowledge of how a carb works and the understanding on how to tune them properly as they need constant attention based on the time of year.
