Just bought a 85 and wanted to know what trans is in it

The factory one was a auto. But has been changed out to a 5 speed.

I would guess G52/54 or W56 (not sure sub-model). Forward shift case, steel (rusty) center section on trans.

More than likely G52/54.

Assuming they kept it correct with the year, if it's a 22R the trans is either a G52 or G54. G52 went from August 1983 to May 1985. The G54 was from June 1985 to 1988 model years. The 22RE motor came with a W56-A for the 1985 models. I'm assuming the trans and transfer case were swapped out together (since it went from an auto to a 5 speed) so whoever did it could have put almost anything they wanted in there. I'm no good when it comes to looking at the trans and knowing which one it is. There's plenty of people here that can help out more with that.
