22REC - Interchangeability between 85 & 89 model years?

Is there any major differences between the 22REC in a 1985 and a 1989 Toyota?

Could I use a Throttle Body from a 1989 Toyota on a 1985 Engine?

I found a guy that has a Throttle Body & Ported & Polished intake off a 1989 for like $250. They are both LC Engineering parts.

Also, he has a 140 Amp alternator and a pacesetter header. Will any of this work with my 1985 22RE?

Thanks!

John

Funny, I was at the dealer today comparing part #'s between my 85 and the 89. Most of them relative to the 22re were the same. check with Big Two in chandler/gilbert ( I think). Their parts dept is stellar.

the plugs for the alternator might possibly be different which you could splice if it is. seems that most electrical connectors changed every few years. make sure you use the injectors from your truck if the intake comes with the fuel rail because the impedence is different from 87 and up i believe and the plugs are different and the 89 is the first year i believe that the throttle body is different in that it does not angle downward like the previous ones so be sure and get all the plumbing to the air box or you could make your own if need be. header should be fine with exeption to the location of the o2 sensor. from what i have seen the earlier models had the sensor up close the manifold and the later on they are right in front of the cat.

Intake is different, wiring is WAY different, emissions is diffirent. The long block is the same.

Many people upgrade to the 89+ intake (straight plenum conversion) so a port and polished intake MIGHT be good, but the head would need work to, otherwise the extra airflow is useless.

BOTH the upper and lower intake are different.

I suspect that the TBs are different too.

Well, I was planning on picking it up for future engine mods. Big Bore TB and a upgraded intake would be sweet. However I have not been 100% that it would be a bolt on ready to go kind of upgrade. Because of that, I may wait and allocate the money for something else right now (like bills!) LOL

For sure though, I will pick up the header and alternator. Can't beat the price of $130 for the two.

Thanks for the info and suggestions - I went out to LC's website and looked at the 89+ TB's and the 85 TB and there is a noticable difference between the two.

Killer deal on the alternator. I just checked their site a couple of days ago and they want something like $350'ish...

In addition to LC, DOA Racing also peddles the late model intake plenum (ported and polished). I have read that is a good 'stock' upgrade, along with the TB from same year. I think 88+ donors for that setup. One individuals website describes doing this conversion from DOA (ported and polished, over-bored TB), and then doing it again from a scrap yard for another truck. He stated that the performance was about the same from the stock setup, so there may not be a distinct advantage with port/polish/bored for stock-style applications.

i think i've seen alot of poor opinions about the pacesetter headers (no personal experience). i personally would not buy junk, even if its cheap. i see that money as being half way to a great header, like LCE. Especially if you are talking about 'future' upgrades, why throw money at junk for the shelf?
