Intake Manifold covered in Oily type Crud?

I tried searching and I know I saw it on here somewhere the other day but I can't find it. I pulled my cold start injector out the other day and it was covered in oily dirty looking mess. My truck is an 85 SR5. It has 150,000 original miles on it. It used about a quart of oil in 1000 miles. It doesnt smoke, runs good, and has been well taken care of. I dont think there is any bas compression to speak of and I just tuned it up with the exception of a valve adjustment which is on my list of things to do that was interrupted by a hurricane. The only issues Ive had with it since I bought it are a lil bit of rough idle, but not a constant miss and the hot start problem that everybody seems to have. I definitely think it needs a set of injectors but they aren't in the budeget right now. Thanks

The sludge build up in the intake is caused by the EGR valve when it opens up to recirculate the exhaust through the intake. You need to pull the upper intake and clean it out, as well as cleaning the throttle body.

That makes 2 of us. Pulled my throttle body and it was really bad. I may switch out my EGR and a temp switch and see if it idles better. It takes alot to get that crud off. Brake parts cleaner and abrasive pad...

Carb cleaner works way better than brake cleaner. It will take about 4 cans to get the intake clean.

my 85 4runners intake was so bad that I had to take it to a shop to have them dip it in there ultrasonic tank for 24 hours , the insides came out nice and shinny , the cost was $25 but it was worth it to me because it was so bad nothing that I used would clean it , it prob was never cleaned in 26 years

If you got to my build thread on post #43, I show what you can do to clean it up. Best thing to do is take it off and go to the carwash, but you can clean it on the truck.

Soaking the inside of the plenum (off the truck) with easy-off oven cleaner works good too.

My vote goes to ether-based aerosol products.

So I'm guessing this is a common problem with these. This is only my second 22re and the first one I never messed with at all really. For some reason my exhaust manifold has the little portholes closed off but the egr valve I guess from looking at the fsm gets the exhaust gas right out of the head? Is this correct? I usually always bypassed them on 22r's I worked on. I think I'm gonna leave this one alone though.
