I want to do a frame off restoration

Hey Guys,
I am really interested in doing a frame off restoration/build on my 1985 Toyota 4x4 Deluxe Cab SR5. It already have a 6" lift with 35".

This is what I have in mind
- Small Block Chevy v8 (324, or 350)
- Comparable Tranmission (any suggestions?)
- Better Axles (DANA 44s, what do you recommend?)
- Better brakes
- Lockers (detroit in the front, ARB in rear???)

I want to start doing some research and was hoping you guys could give me some suggestions and some links to needed information. I think this will be a fun project.

Thanks
Leon

cant really call that a "restoration" since you want to change every toyota part besides the frame and body to something else, so you wouldnt be restoring much =p

What you're describing isn't what I'd call much of an upgrade unless you're looking to make it a swamp thing or a dedicated rock-crawler, you didnt really specify the goals of the truck.

If you really want new axles under there, I think if I was considering Dana's and a Chevy smallblock I'd probably go with a 350 and Dana 60's. 44's doesnt seem like an upgrade from toyota axles IMO.

My opinion would be to upgrade your existing springs (you dont mention what kind of lift is on it? Blocks i assume?) to say trail gear or marlin springs, stick with toyota axles, replace the backs with chromolys or do a full floater conversion with chromoly axles and disc brakes.

Redo the front with 86-95 steering box with hysteer, bobby long inner axles, ARB or better yet a toyota high pinion E-locker. Detroit or lockrite powertrax in the back, 5.29's gears, dual T-cases or regear the single to 4.7's

armor ie, sliders, maybe flatbed of sorts, exo possibly and mod out the 22r or if you got the V6 in there, junk it for a 5VZ-FE toyota V8 out of a lexus SC400.

=)
