You say that you found that the problem is the switch... how? If you are actually hearing the headlight relay clicking when you turn on the switch, then it's not likely the switch that's your problem. Start at the relay... see if you have voltage upstream of the switched circuit in the relay. Turn on the headlight switch (listen for the relay click), then check if you have voltage downstream of the switched circuit of the relay.

How to repair the switch, or at least how I repaired my switch:

Does flash mode work (pull back on the dimmer switch)?

Well then check for power at the headlight relay and for good fuses:

The relay may be clicking but if the contacts are burned or pitted, it may not be sending power out to the lights.

I pulled my switch and mine looks nothing like the one in the pick mine sits in the plastic and comes out with 3 screws and there is a lil plate with a detent ball it was all coated in grease so I cleaned it and put it all back together but still no head lights... I followed the wiring and no breaks or open wires and all my fuses and relays are good but no headlights...

I used my multi meter to try and see if I am getting power the meter will flash .030 when I turn the switch but then immediately goes to .000 so I guess Im not getting any power to the headlights... is there suppose to be a wire going from the battery to the relay for the head lights... does any body have pics of under ther hood on a 84-84 22R

Where are you measuring the voltage at? See if you get 12 volts at the headlight common connector pin:
If so try grounding one of the other pins and see if that light comes on. Headlight relay location on my '85:

Hi everyone, I am a newbie to this forum, and I am asking help from all of you. My issue is that my tail lights and the front sidemarker lights will come on at will if I turn the parking lights on then off again they will go out , but only for awhile. Sometimes for a day or so and other times for only a few minutes. I have tried cleaning the headlight switch with electrical cleaner but no luck. This is happening on my 84 Toyota pickup with 22RE engine. Any ideas? thanks ,Rico bob

Make sure the wire is in good shape all the way to the lights. If its controlling all 4 at the same time check where the wire splits in to 4 wires. Might be some bare wire there. Also it will be easier to find if you can find a wiring schematic for you truck. Good luck.
Edit. Also it helps if you start a new thread. The last post was in 2009 and I got suckered in to commenting on it. If you get no responses. Then start a new one in this section.

4 Crawler, Reelal here, I just wanted to thank you for the thread on the headlight switch repair. I'm a 25 year retired toyota tech and this is the first time I have ever had a combination switch apart except to replace a headlight switch stem. I guess what I'm trying to say is when you think you know a lot you discover you don't know much at all. Again thank you and all the other contributors for teaching me so much.

Glad you found the helpful. I imagine Toyota would never train any of their techs for that type of repair, rather find the bad component and then replace it instead. My headlight switch is working fine and this is at least 10 years after cleaning up the contacts.
