head question

i bought an 85 22r with a cracked timing cover. it sat for 5 years ad the head totally rusted out. so i bought a 22r off a friend . i pulled the head off the donor motorand the area by the valves is a different shape than my old head. and the pistons are different too. can i still swap these or shoul i look for a new head?

NO, they are different, and will not work in a direct swap situation.

If the exhaust ports are lightbulb or pear shaped, that is an 85-95 Head. If the exhaust ports are round, its an 81-84 style.

The intake ports are different as well, so you will need the intake AND exhaust manifolds from the other engine. If the one with round exhaust ports came out of an 85, it was a tranplant and the WRONG engine. They may look identical, but one has a different deck height than the other.

refer to the info on the link above on the bottom is a picture that shows what to look for between the 22re. there should be a casting on the exhaust side of the block.

The "newer pear shaped exhaust ports head" is the way to go, that is the motor set up you want. Lighter pistons, more efficient yada yada yada. Keep looking for a head. A complete newer model head sold on ebay for $45 a month or so ago, so just keep your eyes open. Good luck
