When my wheel is to the right and I am going slow (0-5 mph/parking it) the front passenger side makes an awful grinding noise. I think it is a wheel bearing. Is there a detailed write-up on this site or others? I searched and didn't see much. Any tips? How do I know whether to repack my wheel bearings or buy new ones?

Sounds like a wheel bearing .

 

heres the link to the FSM. I used the first link for our trucks, and its all there, perfect. If you're going to pull it apart you might as well replace it. If there is a grinding sound, there's probable already damage to the bearing.

It could also be one of your birfield joints. I would buy the entire rebuild kit, including bearings. Buy them from Toyota or Marlin Crawler. Do not buy junk bearings from a parts house; you will regret it.

Marlin also has larger axle seals that are better than OEM. I just rebuilt my 85 front and rear axles and went with his kits. It's quality stuff.

EDIT Just checked the parts on toyotaworld.com and the wheel bearing is cheaper. Are these the Toyota parts that are also recommended along with Marlin? Thanks

 

it might also be the "thrust" bushing ( i think thats what its called) i actually took my 91 4runner to a toyota shop and they said that the old ones are made of brass and can wear out and to replace them with new ones that have needle bearings would be 500 bucks so if you in there id check them too

 

What size tires do you have? Mine does that too. my old lady was driving my rig around while we were looking for a car for her she told about this awful noise and that the 4runner was going to fall apart. It was the bigger tires rubbing on the pinch weld in the wheel well. check it out first if your broke...... but new wheel bearings are always nice too. good luck, Joe
