Congrats on your find and welcome to YT! I picked up an '86 back in December. Similar story... bought it out of town (LA) and drove it back to Portland. My main glitch on the trip back was the sunroof blew out two hours into the drive at highway speed and then found out that my heater, defroster and wipers did not work -- continued to drive home through freezing temps and snow without a sunroof.
I've made lots of progress with mine. Highly recommend doing a big 3 wiring upgrade.
Check out my build page.

[QUOTE=ErikJeanna;51985687]Problem was the PO kind of "embellished" a few things about the truck. It was supposedly problem free and ran perfect. I told him that I would be making the drive from MT to CA and if he didn't feel confident it would make the trip, to let me know and I would have it shipped instead. He insisted the truck was solid and would make it without any issues. He was wrong.
Nice truck and great story. Nothing like a road trip in a truck you have never seen before...
I found my 88 extracab on Craigslist from a title loan lot in Phoenix last year. the guy I got it from said it was perfect. I made it home fine but it was exciting.
Please post some more pics of your sliders. I am thinking of building some like them.

Just keep the wallet out brutha and enjoy! I love my 85 but there is no shortage of things to repair...
Instead of fixing the auto, maybe swap a stick? I'm assuming, I saw the pic of the dash...

I like the rims you had on it. Those "rockstar" one look ...funky.
Super nice truck though. Id of been a nervous wreck the whole way back with that radiator.

I agree about the auto being better to wheel...I like mine. It is just a power issue. I will probably keep mine also and just add a gear driven transfer case down the road, Enjoy the runner!
Edit- something that helped me cool mine is to use a larger tranny cooler instead of the radiator doing double duty. It didnt like to crawl at low speeds. The tranny stays nice and cool on the trail now and in traffic.
