Engine Idle issue 93 4Runner

Hi,
When I drive the 4runner at high speeds for 50 miles or more when I come to a stop the engine is running very rough and barely idling... like 200 rpms. If I stop and let it sit for 5 -10 mins. it runs okay. Otherwise, driving around town it's fine. I don't know much about it but, thought maybe it's the idle sensor??? 260,000 miles.

Any thoughts.

Thank you.

Mark

More info please. Tell us the details of your 4runner. It could be a 22re motor with 500,000 miles or a swapped 350 running a carb set up.

It's a 3.0 L V6. I had a Barnett re-built put in about 4 hrs ago. Just a new block. Replaced air conditioning compressor, power steering, water pump, belts, hoses. Rest is original.

Is the "CHECK ENGINE" light on?

If so, you will want to retrieve any stored codes.

Edit: Mods, please move to correct forum section, thanks!

Yes, the check engine light IS on. Has been for quite a while. When I take a long drive it goes out during the drive.

Check the codes. That will help us help you more than anything. Jump the diagnostic ports and count the flashes on the check engine light.

This is for a 22re but i believe it is similar or the same to get the codes. Then you would need to look them up.

You can call your local parts store and see if they have an OBD code scanner you could use. Not an OBD 2 scanner, they are different.

Hi Guys,

So, I jumped the diagnostic ports. After counting the flashes to the best of my pleeb ability. What I found was:

Number of flashes:
14 - Turbocharger Pressure. - I DON'T HAVE A TURBO
17 - EGR System

I got the codes from: https://www.troublecodes.net/toyota/

That's all I got!

Sometime something wrong will cause other codes to trip as well.

I was getting either a 3,4,5 or 4,5,6 depending on the day. Replaced the O2 sensor and all good. Might be the EGR

Ha... yeah, nothing can be simple. I'll check it again after engine is warmed up etc. See if the codes change. EGR seems like it could be the issue tho. Now I need to see if it can be cleaned or just replaced.

Thanks thefishguy77

I know on the 22re they can be cleaned. So I would imagine yours can be as well. I believe Terrys87 had a write up on cleaning the EGR.
