I found a good deal on one and am wondering if the installation is going to be pain in the butt. I surely did the search but not much to consider.

Cheers,

The Warn 8274 is the only winch I have ever owned. Fast and strong. They cost about $1200 to $1500 new. The biggest difference is that it mounts though the fairlead to the front of the winch and not on the bottom. (note the holes above the fairlead) What bumper do you have? By the way how old is the winch? They been making them for over 30 years.

The winch is about 10 yrs old, in good working condition, according to the seller. I have no bumper now and a low-profile HS9500 laying around. I'm torn between the two but if it's not too complicated to fab a winch mount for it, I might give it (8274) a shot.

Do you have a pic or two of the winch on yours?

It's a little bulky for my liking. Which rig are you planning on putting it on? What do you have for a bumper? It's probably going to take some custom work to get it mounted.

IMO, I like a winch that's tucked in and hidden behind (and protected by) a nice solid bumper. The 8274 is quite large and will probably end up blocking a lot of the grill opening in front of your radiator, so it will reduce your cooling air flow, depending on how you end up mounting it up.

An 85 4Runner. My 91 (DD) already has ARB/M8000 and my FZJ has an OE one.

Yeah, my truck is now stock and I'm moderately building it up to be a trail rig. So I'm just now exploring some bumper options out there. If I was to put the HS9500, it wouldn't be too hard to find a nice bumper but the 8274 is a whole different story.

Thanks for chiming in.

the 8274 is one of the best winches ever made. It does block air but it doesnt cause overheating due to the air will flow through the motor. I have one that been on the truck since 1985 and still works great

I don't disagree with you. It does look like a great winch, and it certainly gets good reviews. It's just hard to hide... that's all. If you don't mind that, and you can find a way to mount it on your rig, then I'm sure you'd get lots of years of use out of it if it's still in good shape.

Can you provide me some pictures of the mount? I'd like to see if I can fab up my own mount.

i'd say go for it...forget trying to hide that sucker, let everyone know you got an awesome winch. my dad bought one in '92 when he bought a truck and then sold it to a friend a few years back, but it's still working like new...

Factory electric winch was an option for the LandCruiser 80 series sold outside North America market. It's rated only 8000# but huge and looks like 10000# easily. Mine is sitting waiting for installation. I'll try to post some pics later.

Ok so this is my first ever post.

I just installed an 8274 on my 85 truck. I used a Downey bumper for an IFS truck as a starting point because I found it on Craigslist for $50. It was all pretty basic, just welded on some plate for the winch, used the stock bumper mounts and made up some mounts to lock the bumper in underneath the frame (the whole setup is bolt on.)

It does stick up and out pretty far, but it has not bothered my cooling.

Here are some photos. Took these right after the install, now the winch has synthetic line (so nice):

Here it is. 150 lbs of meat!!

Now it's time to calculate whether it's worth it. Right now I'm leaning toward the low-profile HS9500 one but you never know.

willia12, that has to be ugliest winch mount I have ever seen. Granted I am a fan of the 8274. That said, I firmly believe that to each his own and if you like it then good for you.

I think the mount matches well with the rest of the truck.

That winch already has a mounting plate, you should be able to weld the plate directly to your front crossmember after you remove the body crossmember in front of the radiator.

Put some gussets underneath, remove the grille, then make up a new bumper and you're good to go. If you want it tucked in closer, it's possible to move the radiator back one inch with some spacers.

If you want to try to hide it, you can put the stock bumper back on, but IMO the stock bumpers are more like tinfoil than an actual bumper.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if the winch is too tall to fit below the hoodline and hood latch. Measure first.
