Coolant in oil?

Coolant in oil?
I have and 84 pickup with the 22r. I have been trying to get it to pass emissions here in utah, but the emissions out puts kept changing so much each time i took it back i was having a hard time adjusting the carb. Well, while i was testing the final time, steam started comming out my valve cover vent (where the hose connects to the carb). well, it then blew my dipstick out and started spitting oil all over the place. well it was not just oil, i got coolant in the oil. Ive put a lot of time into this truck (its been sitting for 6 years), and i dont wanna give up yet. My guess is either the head gasket blew from being all dried up, or the head cracked. im hoping its just the head gasket. So ive started to take down the motor, i got the valve cover off, but it seems to be a little harder than i thought it would be. Do you think this is the problem? or is there something else it could be? also if so do you know where there is a diagram showing how this motor comes apart? so i dont take apart things i dont need to. Thanks for any help.

it sounds like an HG to me. Because you have coolant in the oil, you may want to think about doing more than just replacing the head gasket. The coolant/oil mix does damage to the bearing surfaces. Someone could correct me on that I'm sure but.. its what I've been told in the past.

i would bet money your timing chain has worn through your timing cover. if you pull off your water pump you will notice the holes on the right side where the impeller goes. if not your head gasket is toast. you can replace the timing cover on that engine without pulling the head but i reccomend if you do , replace the timing chaing with an engnbldr timing set. also the 84 block is slightly different from the 85-up "lazer block" so the timing set and timing cover from the late block wont fit and are a bit pricier. pull your water pump and give it a look, take a flashlight and shine it into the hole the water pump went and look down on the drivers side to see if you see any light through the cover, if you do then thats your problem if not youve got a head start for pulling your head and also replacing your timing chain.

Thanks alot. Ill take a look into that first.
If that is the problem, how much you think thatd cost to replace? and if its the head gasket, is that a pretty involved process to change? and does anyone have a how to diagram or pics of how to take it apart?
Last question(for now), ive been looking around on here alot, and it seems either this timing chain or head gasket issue seems to happen a lot, what other common problems should i check out before i attempt to use this truck?
Thanks,

Thanks,
The fact that you make a statement like
and if its the head gasket, is that a pretty involved process to change?
A HG repair is basically
Split the engine in half
reassemble.
Its pretty durned involved.
To tackle this you would need
-- a large assortment of tools
-- a FSM (factory service manual)
Its not an impossible task for a DIY mechanic - but IMHO its not a task to tacke if you have to ask "how hard is it and where is a diagram on how to take the engine apart".
Unless you are totaly penny pinching - I would do at LEAST a valve job.
And given the coolant in the water issue that you have... Id suspect main bearing damage etc (i.e. I suspect you cut the timing chain cover and NOT blew the head gasket).... which means that getting a running motor would be a more cost effectiv repair than rebuiling your existing motor....

a toyota head gasket was the first major repair ive ever done on a vehicle. It's not too hard the first time, you dont need an FSM although its a good thing to have, a Haynes manual is the easiest to get and is good for most normal problems that will occur with your truck. also when i did my first head gasket i had very limited tools. just be prepared for your truck to be down for a while, and since you have water in the coolant im guessing it is. im sure you can find a write up on here somewhere or at least enough info from searching to answer your questions. also have a friend help you, two sets of hands are way better than one.

Thanks for all the info guys. I dont think im in over my head, i have just never been into a toyota engine, and was trying to get an idea of how much time im looking at and if there was any secrets to it. My old chevy engine was pretty simple to take apart and put back together. I found a thread on here of a guy who did it and took detailed picks of all he did, so that has given me a good idea of where some "hidden" bolts and a few tricks to help.
Well, thanks again. If i run into any probs, ill definately be on here for some guidance.

x2 on checking the water pump first I saved a buddy a ton of $$$ by checking that first every place he had taken the truck to had told him it was his HG.
if you do the work yourself take pictures as you go with a digi cam at the largest setting that way if you are having any troubles when putting the motor back together you can go over the pics.
as for tools pully puller and torque wrench 0>200 ftlb 8>21mm sockets and 10,12,14mm deep wells and maybe a 17mm deep well and a good breaker bar.
and a few card board boxes to list your bolts on when we did our last HG had a box for each different part of the motor.
