Charcoal canisters leaking gas
The charcoal canisters seem to be leaking gas now. I don't know what is causing it, but I'd really like to know.
I am beginning to think that perhaps there isn't vacuum going to them like there should be? If so, how can I test the vacuum switch? I can't just plug the vacuum lines from the canisters directly into the intake manifold, because when i do that, the truck just dies.

unscrew gas cap...problem fixed!
From what I have found, the canister is allowing pressure to build up in the gas tank, and is leaking from the line out the bottom of the canister. Have yet to figure how to fix except replace it. Maybe someone will chime in that knows more..
PS: might can search and find more info also

The FSM lists a testing and cleaning procedure for the cannister. The vacuum purge line on the cannister hooks to the P (Purge) port on the throttle body, at least on the earlier 22REs. The P port is offset in the TB so that it only has full vacuum at some partial throttle opening, but not much at idle. I think later models may use a VSV to control that function. Make sure that port is not clogged with soot:

^This one has a carburetor, is there still a purge port on the carb?
^^Well even when I opened the gas cap, the gas didn't stop leaking out, it was still leaking out in a steady small stream until all the gas left the line or something. I screwed around with it for about 20 minutes trying the vacuum lines, but didn't get it to leak again.
edit: I just pulled off the line that says TANK on it and gas began pouring out. So I plugged that and let all the pressure out of the gas tank and gas no longer came out of the line. Is it normal to have gas pour out of the line?

Nope, definitely not normal. That line should be vapor only. Do you have an auxiliary tank on your truck or recently did anything with the fuel pickup plate? Generally what you describe would happen if you overfill the tank - recently filled the tank? It might just be a one-time thing if you kept "topping off" after the pump turned off.

It's got the stock tank on it, no auxiliary. Never messed with anything inside of it. This happens with the tank full, half empty, almost empty, ect. ect. it's not picky with the fill level it seems.
It has also happened a couple of times. Someone suggested that I have the vent and feed lines hooked up backwards, but would it still be getting gas if that were the case?

I apologize for reviving this post, but I was searching issues with the charcoal canister. A friend had the same issue in his 1984 Celica and he said the canister was plugged and unable to release pressure. I have a problem of my own now and since my friend sold his truck I can't get a quick answer. I just bought a 1985 pickup and the purge line from the charcoal canister is missing. It has a weber carb and I can't seem to figure out where that purge hose is suppose to go to. Can anyone chime in and maybe share a picture indicating the location it is suppose to go to? Thanks!

I had the same issue with y 3vze. I shot some penetrating oil in the vent port from the tank. I let it sit for about 30 min. Came back and using low psi from my air compressor, I blew some air in the same vent port and it freed up the valve. Worked for me, it hasn't built up too much pressure since.
