ECU Bypass?

Hello I can't find anything on the subject but can the ECU on a 1984 4runner be bypassed? I feel as thought it isn't doing anything on my runner since I have a Holley carb, no emissions, and MSD ignition and coil. What else does it do? Thanks guys.

Well, I would not call it an ECU (Engine Control Unit) because it does not control ignition or fuel systems.

Toyota calls that box the Emissions Computer because it controls when each emissions system functions.

If you have removed every electrically controlled emissions system, then the computer probably isn't doing anything.

You can unplug the computer and drive around a little while to see if anything changes. If not, go ahead and remove it.

Does anyone know if removing the ECU/ECM which leads to a failed tachometer condition will affect the AC on a 22R as it does on a 22RE? I don't currently have my ac working so I can't simply test it out but want to move to a Performance ignitions HEI distributor and will do so before the AC is working again. This info would help greatly, I appreciate any help you guys can send my way. Thanks.
