Carburetor Problems
I have a 20R/22R hybrid engine in a 1st gen toyota pickup. I have a Weber 32/34 carb and this is what happens when my truck dies:
1) the RPM needle jumps up and down
2) The engine shudders and the truck drives super jerky (like its running out of fuel)
3) The truck stops running and isnt getting any fuel to the engine.
I checked the fuel line just before the carb and there is fuel.
What would make my carb clog like that?

Ya im in the same boat.... I have like nothing after half throttle it just falls on its face. I have the same carb, I have done the lean idle adjust procedure like ten times and I threw a new fuel filter on it. I am starting to lean to a weak fuel pump... Anyone?

Im telling ya, rebuild the carb. One i rebuilt her, no issues, except i forgot to adjust the choke, so no choke till i drill the rivets and replace with screws. Give her 3 pumps in the morning, and fires right up.

I also have a 22r that is slowly but steadily running like crap. I still have the stock carb, is is better to reubild it?? I've heard of readjusting the float level to gain steeper angles while climbing. (I intend to do some rock climbing) Is this true?
samziegl can you post some pics of the carb rebuild/problems you encounter. i'm eventually going to rebuild mine soon.

I'm in the middle of a head gasket / timing chain replacement and I'm thinking I might want to rebuild the carb while I'm at it. I was having some issues before the HG blew that I'm pretty sure is the carb.
If I do the carb - I want to do everything including the floats (separate part/purchase).
Any tips would be appreciated as the AISIN looks intimidating to the first-timer.

yea samziegl im having the same problem. i have a lot of rust in my gas tank so you might want to dump out your fuel filter on a white paper towel and see if you got rust in it. if so you prolly got rust in the carb. rust in the jets or float stuck. unfortunatly i have taken mine apart several times i having the same problem. so i guess one day im going to have to change all my lines and everything and hope for the best

I had rust in the tank/filter and after rebuilding the carb I used berrymans b12 in every other tank of gas, went through a bunch of filters, but eventually the b12 cleared all of the rust from the lines. If there is rust the b12 or seafoam (b12 is cheaper) will keep it from building up. just my .02. -Abe

Buy a oadapter that accepts the holley carb to the stock intake. With a little porting, take a Ford 2 barrel gskt and clean the adapter so the gskt fits .Find a Ford 2 barrel carb new or rebuilt, check and change the jets to some smaller ones .I run 40s.Still a tad rich for my truck. You will have to modifiy your linkage to work properly. It is a great trade off reaonable cost and great runability.

I brought my '83 p/u 22R into the shop to have the carb. rebuilt. But now I am selling the truck and have an '81. I feel the carb going out and want to swap them out before hand. I'm not much of a mechanic, yet.

Is it really that easy?
I can get my hands on a chiltons from the library. I just really don't have the funds to take it in again.
Advice?
