carb. 22r trouble

last week i removed a majority of my emmissions stuff including the smog pump. i plugged all the holes in the carb and intake manifold and it ran fine for several days. over the last three days the engine has been choking out or abruptly dieing while driving the problem has gotten so bad that i cant get it a few miles down the highway before it starts to sputter out. only happens once the engine warms up, it idles fine however

any ideas?

i have already replaced the fuel pump and distributer cap and rotor

make sure your choke is opening. since its doing it only when its warm it sounds like the choke isnt opening up.

I have had the same issue with mine. Check fuel delivery...I replaced all my gaskets (carb and intake manifold), and still had the problem. I didn't take the fuel filter into account because it wasn't more that 3 months old, but after I replaced it , she ran like a champ again.

Anyone know a good source for replacement gas tanks? I am assuming mine has some issues since the fuel filter was getting clogged in 3 months.

Exactly what emission components did you remove?

Sometimes people get carried away and remove the hoses to the vacuum advance diaphragm, remove PCV system entirely, or remove their charcoal canister and wonder why they're having issues

well at first i did not remove vital vacumn lines or emmissions systems that directly effected the vacumn system. vacumn advance was functioning properly as well as the egr and pcv systems. in the end it was the carb. i replaced the stock one with a (say what you will) webber and the problem was solved. payed 250.00 for my webber and i think its great. removed my egr system and machined block off plates for the head and intake. it cleaned up the engine compartment a lot. the only vacumn lines i have to deal with are vacumn advance and brake booster. stock carb mst have been in pretty rough shape cause ive got loads more power. webber worked for me

thanks for the advise guys

Just curious, how much HP did you gain by taking off all the emmisions?

It was a noticable increase on my 22r. I have been meaning to take it in and get it dyno'd. There is a place in town that will do it for $75. But, I ended up getting a new clutch. Maybe soon I'll get it in. When I did my top end rebuild when I blew my head gasket, I pulled out the last of my emissions, pipes and all. With my new clutch, I can light the tires up, theyare only 235s but I am locked in the rear.

I'm with you. I've taken my stock carb three times now to my mechanic. He adjusts it and within one week it's running rich like before. Now if only my weber carb would get here...
