transmission question?

have my 85 pickup with EFI. I believe W56 tranny. 1-5 is fine but reverse is unable to be found. you can put it into reverse and it just grinds and kicks out... can't hold the gear in at all. Is this a hard rebuild or should I get a replacement tranny? any help would be appreciated!

the reverse gear i believe would be the easiest to replace. its on the back portion of the transmision housings ( belhousing/housing/center section/back housing/tcase) and is only a few gears to work with. to fully rebuilt the transmission youll need pullers, a press, snap ring pliers and a good set of sockets/misc and a magnet would be great. be sure not to lose the srpings and balls and youll be fine. how i did mine was take it a apart slowly, take tons of pics and label everything in order. i even added numbers so i could not lose track and go in reverse order apon reasembly.

Its a great learning experience and its really not that hard to do at all

If your clutch isn't completely disengaging it could cause this problem.

Yea, my friends clutch SC was on the way out and his did that. I still think it sounds like a rebuild coming up.

before shifting in reverse...go to 3rd gear and then to 4th and then reverse...try that!
