blown head gasket
well after trying to trace the bad miss and no power and ลลลล gas milage i started it up and looked closely at the exhuast coupler and water is seaping out so now i gotta tear it down. whats a good top end gasket kit that has everything? also are there any things i should look for or do? thanks

get the head gasket from toyota and the rest from a parts store, or you can buy a head set from any parts store. felpro gaskets are pretty much the norm. if the chain hasent been replaced in the last 60k miles or so might as well do that also.

engnbldr's gaskets are very good -- his head gasket is on par with toyota's, and depending on your dealer, may be the same...
have the head resurfaced at a minimum, as there is usually good reason why it it blew. overheating is the usual suspect, so it probably warped a little.

yea i had a sticky thermo on it and it got up to the red didnt actually go into the red line.but i was just idling packin in some dirt i got out and when i got back in like 10 secs later it was rising and i hoped it would drop back off again. i planned on doing the thermo the day after this happend which was yesterday but it kinda hot for about 30 secs max. but i noticed white smoke before this happened untill it warmed up.im gonna take it apart and take the head to the machine shop and check it out and resurface it if its ok(hopefully). i will do the timing chain too, it has got quit a bit of slack.thanks for the gasket help. ive seen a lot of blown gakset on 22r is there a problem? but the last people to touch the head was a head shop that rebuilt the head

most of the time, there are only 2 things that will blow a head gasket on a 22R. #1 cause is overheating, like the thermostat sticking, radiator running out of coolant or junk blocking water jackets. the other is corrosion from old antifreeze wasting the water jackets near the fire rings on the head.

u think i did any head damage? how much would it costs to replace the head? i heard that a celica double roller chain will work on these 22r. a toyota tech at the dealer told me that a while ago

just look for a reliable mechanic to do the job, so that you won't be spending much in replacing your head gasket

Definitely go with an OEM head gasket (I wouldn't trust anything else) if you have to have any substantial amount of material removed during resurfacing, you can get a thicker head gasket to compensate (milling the head changes the the distance between the crank and cam sprockets and can effect cam timing). Also, if you suspect that the head got warped, check to see that the cam dosen't bind in it's saddles, that would require the head to be straightened or replaced (I've seen broken cam chains and sheared dowels so, beware) Now, back to our regular programming---------Hans

I ended up buying the head gasket from a reputable place in san diego that toyota recommended because im not spending 60 or 80 i think it was for jsut hte head gasket. Im gonna be ordering a double roller cam chain, oil pump and all the other little things up front then tear it down. i heard about the deckin the head makes u get more slop in the timing chain which is my only worry right now. i guess ill have to find out.

Thats a big much... im just gonna buy a new timing chain/gears,oil pump and new cover. My water pump is practically new so thats ok. I got the head gasket itself. now all i need is top end gasket kit minus the head gasket and figure out if i can deck my headso i dont have slop in the chain and jump a tooth. Im looking at a brand new head off ebay thats made out of a stronger material and its comes complete all assebled with a 5 year 50k or or somthing warranty for around 300 bucks. How long do the single roller chain usually last? my bottom end is all fine and i really want htis thing to run good for a long time when its all done.

You would never mill the head enough to get "slop" in the chain but, enough to maybe, alter your cam timing. An adjustable cam gear or thick head gasket can take care of that, though.---------Hans

its possible i know that for sure because my brother works for a shop and they were rebuilding a 22r and when they got it back form the machine shop they decked the head and block and it jumped like 6 teeth when they started it.
With a new chain and guides and sprokets should i be ok?
