check your cover top switch, it might think your top is off and therefore wont let you roll up the window.

for emergency temporary measures: you can use hardwire the motor to get it up (while it is closed and locked).

It won't solve your problems, but it will let you keep it all protected from the weather while you track down a short or grounding out wire or something.

Did you test the switch on the center console?

Do you have good ground?

Is it possible the key tumbler in the tail gate is crunchy after years of use and it's not going all the way left or right?

Your rear wiper needs to be in the stowed position also. In a pinch run two wires right from the motor to a good ground and hot wire operate the window.

In my build thread below, I tried to put alot of information about the rear window on post #185 and #186.

A very good point I over looked while fighting the window in some very cold windy rain...I eventually said eff it.

Hey thanks a bunch guys. This has been such a huge headache. Turns out it was my canopy sensor or bolt "a" on factory diagram. The bolt is supposed to be shorter than the rest so it doesn't damage the sensor when you tighten it down. I unknowingly used a regular bolt and crushed the sensor. So I did what Terry suggested and hardwires the motor to a aux switch that I installed inthe dash. Thanks again guys!!!

do you happen to have a photo which depicts the bolt "a" you are referencing (because a picture is worth a thousand words...)?

you can also....

jumper that sensor (or even the sensor plug, if it's broken), to bypass it and keep the rest of the system intact.

but if you already rigged another switch and everything then no big deal.

Well I don't have mine anymore didn't think/know about it when I put my canopy back on. But it looks the same as the other bolts, just shorter.

Yah I just realized That there is way to many sensors to go through it all right now I just want it to work for now then I'll figure it out when I have some more time. Wouldn't be hard to change it back once I fix the problem

Actually, I should have been more precise, because I meant a photo of which location in the truck denotes Bolt "A" ?

should be the second from the back. pull the rear side panels and you will see a little black box right under where a bolt goes., pull it and jumper it with a wire and then you never need to worry about that bolt ever again.

I need to replace the motor to the rear window! Will the motor from the passenger side power window replace it?

I think I read somewhere that any window motor will work. don't quote me on it, though...

1989 Toyota 4Runner rear window issue

Hey guys...
so I took the top off and recently put it back on.
the driver side 2nd bolt from the back has the sensor everyone knows about. What I didn’t know is when you put the top back on you have to remove the cover next to the roll bar and underneath the sensor you have to push up on the piece of plastic to get it back to top on mode.
took about 5 min to do.
and about 2 months of headaches to figure it out
