Probably because that's a very odd problem. The computer controls the timing.

Have you checked the advance weights to make sure they're not stuck (if that distributor even has advance weights, I don't know)? Mine were almost welded in the closed position on my 59 Pontiac.

Have you checked computer codes yet?

Another possibility is to test out the signal generator. 140-180 ohms. Take the reading with the motor at normal operating temperature, since that's when they show their faults. Faulty ones usually test fine with a cold motor.

Assuming you've checked all the obvious simple stuff, pull out the distributor and inspect the gears. Inspect for sloppy or cracked distributor shaft. Only seen it a handful of times in many years, but it can happen. Good luck.

Cut the aggravation and put a Weber carb on it. I did it to mine and I didn't lose any power, in fact it has more torque.

for off road use id lean towards efi over a weber carb. ever been in a mudpit or on a rough trail and had the engine die because the float pins were knocked out of whack? on a stock 22r carbed truck id stick witrh the aisin carb instead of a weber but a holley 2300 350 cfm carb would be my choice... a weber 32/36 flows the same as stock or less a weber 38/38 would be the way to go with a weber. if you understand efi and how it works your alot better off sticking to it. if your tps is off it could cause this issue that and the dizzy...
