85 rear window problem

My rear window was running slow when I bought my truck, and the rear key wont activate it at all. The other day I was rolling it up from the front switch when it just died, it would roll down but was barley moving going back up. So I got my nephew to push the up button in the cab while I "helped" it manually myself. Now it wont move. I know it is not off track because I can see it. And it has power because it is making a thumping sound when trying to roll up. I don't have a repair manual, but the noise is coming from this piece it seems:

Anyone had this problem before?

Sounds like you need a new motor. Take it off and see if you can hook it up to a battery, it is just positive and negitive, put them on one way, it turns one direction, swap them it turns the other. If it still works it may be the gear that makes it go up and down, check all the teeth and see if it still lines up. I may have a motor laying around i could sell ya. Pm me with any Q's.

Ha, you are expieriencing the same problem as me. The only solution is a $400 module, or some backyard mechanics.

Look on www.4crawler.com

He has lots of rear window/wiper tips and things to try. My rear window works, my rear wiper does not.

Sounds to me like the rollers in the track are bound up resulting in either the gears jumping or perhaps stripping. It's been a while since I had my '85 tailgate apart, but if I remember correctly, there are a couple rollers that ride in a track that pushes the window up. Judging by what rust I can see in your tailgate, it is possible the rollers can't move. A portion of all the crap over the years that the tailgate window wiping seal lets get by like to get into that track.
The problem now would be getting to them to check them. I think in order to check them you will need to get the window rolled up some.
****WARNING THE NEXT BIT OF INFO COULD LEAD TO MASSIVE WINDOW GLASS DAMAGE****
You can bypass the door closed detection switch for the window by simply turning the latch on the left hand side of the tailgate to the latched position while the tailgate is open. Then, with a helper if possible, activate the window switch and try pulling the window out with steady pressure and maybe even a few quick gentle tugs. You need to get the window past the point of where it is jammed and having the gate down may help by reducing the load on the motor and track. BE VERY CAREFUL! If it does start working, it can run the glass right out and on to the ground.
If the motor itself was dead and needed to be replaced, I don't think you would get the thump sound. It likely wouldn't have enough power to make the gears skip. Continuing to try and get it to raise a window with problems with the track will certainly kill it eventually.
I can try and get some pics of mine for you sometime this weekend if that would help.

gotcha, thanks for the info, haven't messed with it for a week now, but it will slide up & down easily by hand. This leads me to belive the gears are off track.

You said the motor makes a thumping noise, correct? Sounds to me like its one of three things:

1. You need a new motor as the gears inside it are stipped out
2. THe teeth on the window regulator are either worn or broken, so you need a new one of those. If something is off or jumped teeth, it did it for a reason and resetting the regulator wont do any good, as its just going to do it again.
3. The tracks in the glass are so rusted, the rollers wont move. ALL 4Runners have rusted tracks in the back glass, to some degree. Poor design caused this. Like Farenheight said, the thumping may be coming from the rollers not moving at all.

Not sure if you can buy the tracks new anymore, but last I checked you could. If not, the glass assembly is expensive and hard to find.

I sold my complete 85 working tailgate w/ glass for $100. I was tired of looking at it and it was just sitting in my garage floor collecting dust. I would think the glass assembly for any of the 1st gens would work as they all appear the same.

Any 1st gen glass would work, but some are tinted differently. SOme have a bronze tint, some have just a clear/bluegreen tint
