What I would do first is look into the intake past the throttle body/ butterfly valve, if there is a lot of black goo/residue, the engine could be gasping for air. The air filter may need to be changed/cleaned. The fuel filter may need to be replaced and/or the injectors could be dirty. Run some SeaFoam in the gas tank and the intake. after that, Im not sure. Someone who knows about like vacuum leaks, etc. might chime in...or, your best bet would be to search if you haven't already. Or search some more...

I would replace the fuel filter and see if that makes a diference, you can also check the throttle position sensor, and if none of that helps then it night be a bad fuel pump, also the timming could be off, has the timming chain ever been replaced ?.
