84 toyota truck stalls and identity crisis!
hey thanks for taking the time!
so i have 2 problems
i bought this 84 toyota pickup 4wd and i got it for a steal. the guy told me that it was a 4wd truck with a 2wd engine in it. so i want to find out what engine it is so i can get parts for it. does any one know where the engine ID number is or maybe a vin stamped on the block?
problem 2: the truck runs almost perfect but when it get to operating temp the idel is very crappy almost like its gonna stall... very low so i tryed adjusting it and still no luck. also i dont know if this is related but when im driving it and i start to slow down, i kinda hear something coming from the exaust pipe kinda like a backfire but not quite as louad at all then when im almost at a stop it just dies. but it fires right back up very easy and this happens almost every time i come to a stop.
i was thinking about rebuilding the carb but not sure what to do... any feedback or help would be awsome! thanks you so much for reading!

Welcome to Y/T, I would suggest a seach for the info your looking for but here is some basic info.
As far as a "2wd" engine, I don't belive there is THAT much differance between the 2 per say, other than some minor stuff like oil pan ect. I think there would be a differance with some of the wiring like the 4wd light ect. If your carb'd you have a 22R. Search for that and see if you can find the differances your looking for.
as far as your problem, Kind of sounds like a vacum leak of sorts so I would start there.
parts sites:
Addicted off-road
WabFab off-road
Marlin Crawler

mine used to do the same.. it would have spells where it would idle out of sight when warm or die when i went to stop. but this passed weekend it picked up some trash in the primary and ive had the carb kit sitting around for awhile. so i mustered up the courage and rebuilt it this weekend. after i got it tuned decent all my problems disappeared. as far as rebuilding it goes. the hardest part is gettin all your throttle and choke linkages figured back out. or atleast it was for me. and me being a first timer on it. it took me close to 4 hours. but its worth it. so any who goodluck!
