84 p-up with some issues

I have an 84 P-up that I finally got the correct alternator in.I was running the internal one for about a month. Now I have the correct one in ,and the gauge doesnt go past 18 volts anymore. So I get everrything changed out and test drove it.Everything ran fine after letting it idel for 10 mins while I checked the draw on all the lights, and checking the gauge.

I drove it around the block, and on the Freeway for a testdrive and had no problems. I let the truck set for a few hours jumped in it to get my kid from school, and it started no problem, but then stalled after pulling out. It restarted, but soon stalled again.I repeated this about 4 more times before I jumped in my 72 Fordosaures and p-up my kid.

So now I'm trying to figure out whats going on now with the truck.Did I damagesomething drivin it around with the wrong alternator ,or is something else going on.

Any ideas or help would be awesome.Thanks.

She started right up yesterday no problems but now I dont trust her to even get across town.

Fuel injected or carbed? Will it still turn over when it dies? Do you smell raw gas? Does it try to crank at all?

Thanks for getting back to me.

It's Fuel Injected. It will turn over when it dies, but just wont start. Seems just fine when I first start it,but after it warms up it stalls.Wait a few mins then she starts ,but then stalls...again and again.Had to milk her home from about 3 miles.

I do not smell gas at all. It's just wierd. I've been searching the site, and I think I'll check all the grounds to start with. I dont know diddly about FI engines. Should I take it somewhere ,and see if it throws out a code?

I can take apart all the stuff and stick a new alternator on it .....but electrical stuff just stumps me...even if thats what it is.
She has 240,000 and she seems to still have some kick left to her....I think its something simple, but right now I'm just stumped. Any more ideas? And thanks again for replying.

Have you changed the fuel filter? Many people here know much more than I do and maybe they will respond. Is the check engine light on? The Field Service Manual on the link provided by Waskillywabbit will give you plenty of info on the FI motor and what to check.

What is a Field Service Manual? I know about Factory Service Manuals, but not Field Service Manuals. Is this a new glove box edition?

The Factory Service Manual is used in the Factory, The Field Service Manual is used in the Field. Neither one to be confused with the Garage Service Manaul which Haynes produces and gives you enough info to get into trouble.

Ok.I've replaced the fuel filter, and the Air Flow Meter. Checked the wire from the Coil to the cap and found out the hard way it has SPARK
It will start with starter fluid and run very rough with it,but wont stay running without it. Had my BIL take a look at it and he advised to take the fuel filter line from the tank side of the filter, and turn the key and see if it squirts fuel.....if not....new fuel pump. Does this sound correct? Any ideas?

Everybody that I talk to says just keep throwing parts at it till it runs again......I just dont agree with that way of thinking. Seems to be a fuel issue tho. Any more help you folks could come up with would be great.
Thanks.

I agree with the BIL and try to see if your fuel pump is getting fuel. Glad to know your getting spark...i've done that a time or two.

Just cause the fuel pump may not be sending fuel, doesn't mean it's a bad pump. Make sure the pump is getting its power when it's supposed to, according to FSM. Have you tested the COR? Circuit Open Relay

This makes a lot of sence to me. How would I locate and test the COR?
