4runner tailgate window

my 90 4runner window is slightly disfunctional. It rolls down well but sometimes when rolling it up it doesnt work. then you press the button a bunch of times and it eventually goes back up. any suggestions?

we cleaned out the switch so i dont think its that

Would a switch out of a 2nd Gen 4Runner work for my switch? That's what the problem is, and it's hard to find a 1st Gen 4Runner rear window switch.

Toyota used the same switch from 84-92. In 93, they eliminated the window lock button and changed the rear window switch.

The plug will likely be a different color (2nd gen plugs were green, 1st gens were cream colored) but its the exact same switch. If you find a rear window switch with a blue plug, it will not work. That is the 93-95 style switch.

My window did the exact same thing when the relay was wearing out. Went on 4 crawlers site and follwed the instructions to solder in the identical relays from radioshack for 4 bucks and saved myself alot of money. Plus my window has never worked better.

so i narrowed it down to a faulty relay or a bad connection... Im going to go get a relay from radio shack tommorrow and replace the relay and see if it works.

ya have you looked at 4 crawlers website? I replaced the down and up relays at the same time it was really easy to do with a cheapo soldering gun. I didnt find a need to buy i solder sucker either i just heated up each pole until liquified and tilted the relay as far as it would go and repeated until it came out. Puttign the ned one is is super easy. I also found that i didnt need to modify my box either the new ones were tight but the fit back in.

I did have one of the radioshack relays go bad a few days after but it was probably faulty as the new one has been working good for about 6 months. Once you do it the first time it is really easy to do, i have done a few for friends now too and has worked great each time. Even if it doesnt fix your problem it probably is about time for new relays anyway and super cheap compared to a new one form toyota.

If you read the web page, there is a Radio Snack p/n as well as an exact replacement Omron part number.

oy, i wish i read this first.
got a replacement motor and took the whole assembly out of the tailgate and took the motor off.
it's very intimidating looking at all the wires and knowing all the switctches that are built in to disable the switch. likewise the previous owner moved switches around and i'm not even sure what does what. we got the window to lower weeks ago and then 2 days ago it just clicked and sat there. i had to take the window out anyway to access the license plate light / logo assembly because the lights were rotted out and need replacing (any suggestions there?).
this is a project vehicle. not near done yet.
stupid question......can i defeat all the safeties and just put it to a switch that makes it go up and down?? (with the exception of keeping the bolt safety).what kind of switch for that.
i read 4crawlers post and it seems there is so much more to this than i thought. just want a window that goes up and down when i want it to.

Yes, just jumper out each switch to disable it. Or replace the whole relay module with a simple set of relays to directly control the motor.

probably will jump them.
the prvious owner disabled (cut and taped) the antenna switch / window lock switch. i think he has a toggle switch (in a different location) to control the rear window lock and the the window up-down switch is next to it.while i have the interior apart i plan on tracing wires. looks like whateve controlled the rear window defroster is gone and it's just as well becauuse the leads were rotted off the window anyway, so i said forget that too.
gonna mess with the window much later....doing body work and trying to find lights i could fit inside the housing for the license plate lights.

I just did mine. Simply unplug the safeties, and remove the bolted ground(white w/ blk tracers) My window now goes up and down whether the top is on or off, no more pain in the ass rear window.

Hey man, thanks......I fixed it a while back. New motor....pain in the a**. But everything works right......word to the wise, check th relays 1st, I see it is sometimes a bad relay and NOT the motor. In our case it was the motor.
