Im looking at 89 4runner body sitting on a 85 4runner frame on craigslist. It has 36" tires, that seem to be about a 10.5" width but Im not sure. The PO swapped the gears out for 5.29's, Im just wondering if this gear and tire match is a good one. I don't know much about gear ratios and all that. Thanks in advance for the help.

 

36s and 529s are a great gear/tire combo this combo should allow you to drive 85mph on the freeway with the 36s

gear combo is about perfect with that set up. Don't expect to be getting over 20 with a truck. I have had 5 Toyota 4wd over the years from 1st Gens to an '05 Tacoma. None of them got great MPG. that is one of the trade off of owning a lifted truck. Plus your mileage will be dependent on condition of the engine (22re or R?) etc etc. Good maintenance, a tune up, proper tire inflation and a light right foot can also help your mileage.

 

for milage you still should get around 23mpg on the freeway

 

I do pretty good with my 37s and 5.29s, my engine is tired, so I cant go that fast on the freeway, and I get horrible mileage, but once I get a new engine. I think it will be perfect, I know toyvania, drives 37s and 5.29s everyday.

 

i have 5.29's in my truck.

i run 33's for DD and 36's for wheeling.

With the 33's its good around town. it picks up pretty good IMO>

The 36" arn't bad either.

On hills, i can pull most hills at 50mph ish in 5th gear with the 33's.
same hill i fight back and forth between 3rd and 4th gear at a little less speed.

On the highway.
with the 33's i top at about 65mph at like 3500-400 rpms.
With the 36's the rpms is much lower at the same speed.
