Question 22RE Overheating

My 22re Has been overheating latley. I have chnaged the thermostate. The gague usally goes up to in the red and than starts tyo drop down. I always got the heat on at this time. I thinking its the fan clutch but it also could be my radiator has gargage in it and needs to be flushed. What Temp Thermostate are yall running. I have a 192 in it right now but I'[m going to be changeing it to 180 soon so see if that helps. I'm thinking its getting stuck closed.

My buddy's 4Runner has similar issues. Besides that he has coolant disappearing with no apparent leaks. He hasn't looked yet, but he has suspected that his timing chain has worn through the water jacket under the timing cover. I am running a 180* thermostat and a Taurus electric fan on my 3.0 V6 since I had overheating issues in the past. Shoot... I just looked at your location and my buddy moved back to Mathews a few months back. He has a white 87 SAS 4Runner...

The head gasket blew on my 88 one time, no water in the oil, it was going out the exhaust. It would go above normal temp on warm up and drop back to normal temp.

Hows your coolant level? Is it staying full? It sounds like your head gasket may be leaking. When air enters your cooling system it will give the symptoms you described. Could just be that the cooling system needs to be purged of all air. My bet is that the combustion is blowing by the HG and causing air in your cooling system. With air in the system the water pump can hit an air pocket and stop pumping coolant. Once it starts circulating again your temp goes back to normal. I hope I'm wrong and it is just somthing simple.
