22r rebuild Q?

Allright guys, i kinda want to pick your brains for a little bit, havent owned a toyota in a few years, but im picking up an 85" Solid axle soon with a 22R and i was wanting to rebuild the motor before i do anything,

now what i was looking at was a rebuild kit from either E-bay or engnbldr.com some typ of cam and a header if i can help it, now my budgets gonna be about $800 bucks so LC is gonna be out of the question, what els would you guys add? what typ of cam and header? the trucks gonna be used as a daily driver but with a little offroad abuse,

also my avatar is an 86" with a 20R long been sold, thanks guys!

thanks alot, i was looking at his site and it looks pretty good, i might be having the engine bored .30 over, might as well wile im getting the engine hot dipped, i was just woundering what other people have done, also i might have a 20R head off my old truck, would that be worth rebuilding and putting on?, never really understood the 20/22R hybrids, does the head just bolt on? or are there other modifications involved?? thanks guys

Rusche how long has your motor been going? Whole kit meaning rebuild kit? I have read soo many different opinions, and I was in the same situation as you yoterr. I am in the middle of an engine build and was intrigued by the much talked about fabulous service and cheap prices of engnbldr. Then the guru's remind me you get what you pay for. Do I want to go cheap on the engine of all things? probably not. I bought a spare block and I have decided to take my time and get LCE parts only. Ordered rods already. Crank and pistons next payday. Cleaned block, dipped, decked and punched out .020 for $150. Fresh start.

Maybe consider finding a good spare block and building it a little slower with top quality parts. Just a suggestion. Consider the long term outcome.

Let me just add, you said you were on about an $800 budget. With the block, clean up and all LCE parts I will be about $100 over that mark. Probably have to spend an additional $200 for misc. stuff (gaskets, new bolts, and bearings). So for about $300-$400 over your budget you will be bullet proof. Is that worth it to you? Peace of mind is worth more then that to me.

yeah i understand where your coming from, the truck will be going no where fast, so im going to be taking my time with it but, the whole trucks going to be on a pretty tight budget, and im going to be driving a car until this beast is done i was just looking at some options, and i like the fact that i would be able to hot dip and get the engine bored over rebuilt and put back together for a little less than my budget, but we will see, ill be looking at alot more stuff b4 it gets done...

I hear that, but how long will it last?

If your are sending it out to get rebuilt for under $800, thats pretty much disposable if you ask me and a heck of a deal. I am putting it together myself and I just don't want to have to do this again in 2 years. Just make sure you search on here for the vendors you want to buy from and read about experiences with different parts before you buy. One companies pistons might be great but there TC kits are crap, you know? Ask Death Cougar a few questions too while your at it. Good luck with everything!
