22R parts on a 20R

Hello, all.

When I bought my '84 LWB, the previous owner had barely swapped a 20R into it, taking out the blown 22R. He gave me the old 22R upper end (head, cam, intake, carb...), and now that I've got the 20R going pretty well, I'd like to start modifying it.

Is there anything from the 22R that would be an upgrade?

Can I put the 22R intake and carb on?
Or the cam?

Thank you for any help.

the only real upgrade to a 20R from a 22R are the block and pistons and carb. most guys swap the 20R head on top their 22R to make a little more power, and the 22R carb since it'll flow more air.

How would I go about using the 22R carb?
I know the 20R is using an electric fuel pump, and the 22R used a mechanical fuel pump that ran off the cam.
Is there a way to make it work off the 20R's electric fuel pump?

yep, pull off the mechanical fuel pump and put on a blockoff plate on the head!

so i take it the PO swapped in an electric pump or used a tank from a '79 or something? '84 would have came with a 22R with a mechanical fuel pump.

LC engineering sells an adapter to bolt the 22R carb on the 20R manifold for about $40.

What about swapping over the whole intake manifold, switching to the electric fuel pump as well, but avoiding the adapter? I'm hoping that since I've got all these parts, I can save the pennies where I can.

Edit: Looking for more info, I found out the 20R ports are round, while the 22R ports are rectangular. Can a dremel tool fix this?

the bolt patterns are different as well. really not worth the gain, as the 20R has a better designed intake manifold also.

my setup:
1982 22R block, crank, rods, aftermarket replacement pistons
1979 20R head, bigger valves and some port work
offenhauser 20R manifold, weber carb
thorley header, DT-542Y(early 22R)

works very well, but gets poor gas mileage. i blame that on my shot in the dark carb tuning...i should install an O2 sensor and A/F meter.

The Adaptor is 27$, just got off the phone with them on Monday to order one for my Propane conversion. Found out I did not need one so did not order it.

What we do for my 350 is hook up a tach (1200 RPM tuning dealy) off of the distibutor and adjust the fuel-to-air mixture till it produces the highest possible RPMs, then turn back the RPMs on the carb on your normal RPM adjustment to your desired speed. According to my pops, it's the easiest way to do it, and it should be Toy friendly.

Grr, so basically, unless I wanna spend a few bucks I can't do anything. Was really hoping for freeness. My J(ust)e(mpty)e(very)p(ocket) is consuming every penny I have.

yeah, i know about setting the idle jets, that was very easy to dial in. but to properly tune the carb's primary and secondary main and air jets, you need an A/F meter.
