Exclamation 1985 Pickup Steering help.

Hey guys i need help with my steering. I have ALOT of play in my steering which makes me look like a drunk while driving. Also, when i get on the brakes the steering pulls HARD to the right. Its a big problem for me.

My rig is a 85 pickup with 6inch lift 35's if that helps.

Your best bet is to ditch the stock steering and go with the Hy-Steer Crossover unit. I have an 81 with 36" tires and lift and it made all the difference in the world.

I'm having a similar issue with my 1st Gen '85 4Runner, but only 2" lift and 32s... what does the hysteer crossover kit involve?

Pulling left or right when braking can be a sticking caliper. Calipers don't like to be submerged in mud.

you can also get bushing kits for the j arm connections online somewhere. they aren't too bad to change and make a BIG difference!

Assuming that your calipers aren't sticking and making it worse,

You need one or more of the following:
1. An anti wrap bar,
2. Steering swap to cross over,
3. Modify and reattached the torque bar when you're on the road
4. Double check that your u-bolts, shackles and hangers are torqued correctly, new drag link bushings and deal with what doesn't go away.

When I lifted my 4runner I got the same issues.
I tightened my u-bolts(They had loosened up, slightly) and learned to deal with it until I changed to crossover steering.

Because of the push-pull steering, the axle wrap causes the steering to pull when breaking.

Has the stock torque rod been removed?

I'll just add that my torque arm had gotten loose & I was experiencing a lot of wandering,as well as diving hard to the right on braking! First area I would check/tighten up is BOTH torque arm bolts, then the calipers..then go from there! HTH,Sleepr71.

Removing the stock torque bar makes it pull when braking.

High steer is your best fix for a lifted SFA Toyota.
