You need a knuckle service kit from Marlin Crawler, All Pro, or Trail gear and I would suggest buying the heavy duty marlin crawler seals as well. Gear oil is leaking through the seal and mixing with the grease in the knuckle causing "pea soup" to come out of the backside of the knuckles, correct?

Rebuild kit:

the marlin crawler front seals work better than everything else out there.

Factory seal is on the left, marlin's heavy duty is on the right.

if you dont have a 54mm thin wall socket, you should get one from marlin at the same time. also, if your wheel bearings are ancient, get those too. IMO its better than getting it all taken apart then finding out that you need to replace them, and then waiting for another few days to a week while your rig is in pieces.

Probably. I believe the only non-basic tools you will need are the 54mm socket as mentioned earlier, and a pull scale. Also, if you have not already, download the shop manual here for the '85, it is very detailed.

i've done this job twice without a pull scale. use a torque wrench to spec and you'll be fine. follow directions provided on 4x4wire.com. you will need plenty of shop towels.

make sure to note exactly which shims go where, including direction towards front. this will save you an alignment job in the near future.
