Post 1985 Auto Hub trouble

Hello All, I'm new here. I've done forum searches and haven't found an answer to my question.

I have a 1985 x-tra cab 4x4 pickup with Auto-locking hubs. I am having some trouble with the hubs, they only lock in some of the time. They work every once in a while, but most of the time, they refuse to lock in.

I was wondering what it would take to get them working properly. I am planning on eventually doing the auto to manual conversion, but I don't have the funds for that at the moment, and could really use four wheel drive now.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Useless are auto hubs and if broken even more useless.
Replace with Aisin manual hubs.

I know that doesn't help you now but neither will trying to use auto hubs.

Great advice given so far. But if you really want to fool around with them, there's some info to be had as for their troubleshooting and servicing.

Download the 1985 FSM, then see the Front Axle And Suspension section. Automatic locking hub troubleshooting and servicing is described on pages FA-34 through FA-42.

Right click the link below, then choose "save target as".

Instead of starting a new thread, I figured I would use this one. I bought some used Aisin hubs from californiacrawlerparts.com. They stated that they were for an '85 Toyota solid axle. When I got them in the mail a month after I ordered them (they sold their last pair right before I bought mine, had to hunt down another pair), I noticed that they had two different face plates. The bolts holding the faceplate on one are lose, and looks like it might have been placed on there right before they shipped it.
It looks to me like the hubs might have been off different trucks, just wanted to make sure they would work on my truck, so I included pics. Sorry about the quality, my camera is broke.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for all the info Wabbit,

Being in the business of refurbishing old hubs, you wouldn't happen to know where I could get a SFA dial for the one that is wrong. I'm just OCD enough that having mismatched looking hubs will bother me.

I might end up sending them to you to be refurbished.

They are getting harder to find.

Just look at one side of your truck at a time

FYI Toyota asked NcTTORA to take down all their FSM links.
