1984 toyota pickup wiring

hey gus im a new here and glad i found this hoping someone here can help me out. well this morning went out and started my truck like always she started right up. well i went back inside and got ready for work came out and and got in her and put it in reverse well when i did i smelt something like it was burning well rolled back and smoke was rolling every where. stoped the truck popped the hood and the smoke was rolling out then shortly the truck cut off. let it cool down tried to start it and nothing happened no power did notice though that the battery terminal was melted and lookin in at the passagner side that on the bottom back side of the motor like a soleinod or somethin it was smokin there. does anyone know what this could be and how to fix this problem thank you

sounds like your starter shorted itself.

do you think i will have to replace the starter also or just the wiring harness

by wiring harness do you mean the battery cables?

not exactly sure about that one man. i just know that the wiring coming off of the battery terminal to the starter if not mistaken was smokin and i think the battery terminal wires are fine so should i just replace the wire to the starter or do u think i will have to change the starter also

I would replace that starter, something cause those wires to fry itself. and yes those are the battery cables not the wiring harness. Get your battery checked too.

ok man i appericate it damn that sucks if i gotta replace the battery too because it is brand new. maybe a month old

should be a warranty on the battery if its bad. just don't tell them what happened. haha.

oh and don't go in there for a battery replacement under warranty and pick up a set of battery cables and starter. That wouldn't look good either. Unless you blame the two on the battery, but I don't see that going very well.

can't remember, usually when starter goes it's because the contacts and solenoid plunger are bad and I would just buy those internal parts of it and basically rebuild it myself which ends up being about $20 in parts, but in your case it probably also fried the starter's motor. If you have an autozone there, you can take both the starter and battery in to get them checked.

hey man got it running like a champ now. was the starter burned up this morning it actually melted the battery post but the battery ended up being fine and replaced the wires. then did a complete tune up plug wires cap all the way and the truck is now running better than when i bought it. thanks for the help
