Will not hold crank

I have an 81 yota truck that has an '85 22r engine in it. One day it started not wanting to idle. Sometimes it will idle fine and when you smash in the cluth at a stop sign it will die but you can crank it right up. It will stay running if you hold the gas petal, while having its fit the engine acts like it has a vaccume leak because it surges and runs strangly. After a few miles of driving it starts acting right and will idle correctly for who know how long. There is not rpm surging while the engine will idle. Just the other day it does not want to start now. I have fire to all plugs, the timing is correct, and I have fuel in the carb but it will not hit. After spinning it over for a few seconds there is no raw unburned fuel on the plugs. It seems it is not pulling fuel into the cylinders for some reason. I dont know if the two problems are related or not. After a few tryes the engine will fire but it may take twenty minutes. Thanks for any help.

85 + engines use a speed sensor to correct . it's in the speedo assy .

79-84 didnt (/84 automatic only) ... what did you do with that wire ?

I have no idea but the truck ran fine when i first got it. It is a problem that thre truck did not have when I first got it. I thought it was the carb, so I replaced it and it did not help.

ohh ...my bad .. speed sensor is only for the fuel injected engines ..

have you checked fuel filter ?
also mechanical fuel pump maybe , there are 2 air/vent holes in the bottom .. check it for leaks .

The carb will be full of fuel, I can see it in the sight glass. Yesterdat I cranked it right up and drove to the store. The truck fired right up at the store with no problems, but after getting home I let it sit for a couple hours and it would not crank back up. Crazyest thing I have ever seen.

I have the same problem at stop lights. It will idle when I start it and let it warm up. Then it seems like 1 out of every 3 stop lights it will die, unless I boost the idle speed to 1500 or so.

I'm not a carburetor expert or anything but if it dies every once in awhile at idle, shouldn't you try adjusting the idle jet? I only have experience with motorcycle carbs, so I don't know if they're comparable.

When you can't get it started...try dumping some gas straight into the carb and see if it fires up

The sight glass is full, or at the right level? I guess you already checked for flooding, but..

Yes, it's supposed to be somewhere in the middle zone.
