will a dual chain kit fit on a 83 yota

83-84.5 you can swap them back and forth single to double willy nilly but they shoulda came with a single from the factory after half way through 84 the timing chain cover changed and they went to the lazer block And those changes made it harder to convert to dual. I was just looking into a couple days ago myself and thats what I learned

Just be careful I think The kits are made for the newer style engines.
Then so very expensive
If your engine is the old style ( stock 1983 engine) the fit could be interesting
You should still be able to get a dual row timing chain for that engine much cheaper.
I was looking to rebuild one of that vintage a few years ago but time flies.
I could get one back then.

With post 8/84(lazer/short block) motors you need a dual row convesion kit with pre 8/84 you need just a regular dual row timing chain set like for a 81-82 motor ( may need other parts like sprokets and guides not sure) and it should just be a take off the old parts and put in the new kinda setup but the timing chains are different lenghts in the short block vs the tall block so I don't think lce's conversion will work on a pre 8/84 motor
Or at least that's my understanding of it

You need a dual row kit (usually comes with the chain, upper sprocket, lower sprocket, tensioner, guide rails, gasket and sometimes a new oil pump and seal). I would go with the kit from LCE or Engnbldr. I would also get a new timing cover if your old one is trashed or grooved from worn guide rails. And while you have everything apart I would grab a new water pump too. MAKE SURE YOU GET METAL GUIDE RAILS!!! And last and most important, YOU NEED THE DUAL ROW OIL PUMP SPLINE DRIVE (part #1016066 on LCE's website). It is shorter than the one on the single row setup. Without it, you will never be able to get the oil pump on.
But the essentials are the dual row oil pump spline drive and a dual row kit. I have a brand new dual row kit somewhere in my garage if you are interested.

I didn't need it since my engine rebuild kit came with a timing chain kit. I just ran out to the garage to checked and everything is there (all the parts are still in the original sealed plastic wrappers) - Upper/lower sprockets, dual chain, tensioner, metal guides, seal and gaskets. It's the kit that Engnbldr sells and the one that I used on my build so it's good quality. It's $70 plus shipping from Engnbldr so I'd be willing to sell it for $50 plus shipping (probably just throw it in a flat rate box which I think is around $10). PM me if you are interested and we can work out the details.
