Why does my truck run like crap!!?!??!?!
First off, thank you to all of you that have helped me in the past. I can't thank all of you so I won't try.Second, the truck. 83 Pick-up 22r 5 spd 4wd 160k
What happens is when I start it cold, it has a slight mis-fire that goes away. But the problems is that whenever I give it too much of the skinny pedal is has a serious misfire problem. It kicks and bucks, loses power(badly), and tries to stall out but comes right back when I lay off of the gas. I've replaced basically everything that bolts to the motor(for various reasons) and I do not know where to go from here. I've replaced the carb, the vacuum lines, fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs, spark plug wires, the rotor, pcv valve, distributor cap, distributor body, vacuum advance, diff fluid, tranny fluid, t-case fluid, tires and even the radio.
I was driving from Ft Collins to Denver last monday and it wouldn't go over 55-60. The exact speed had more to do with the load on the engine. Basically I may as well have tried riding my bike down I25. Eventually it got so bad that I couldn't safely go down the road(everyone here drives 60 or 85 on that road) so I pulled over. I pull the aircleaner cover and lo and behold, there is gasoline in there. Get back home, fiddle with the mixture and I can't get it to stop doing this no matter what. I've run 3 cans of seafoam through it, I run 87 octane and do regular maintenance. HELP! I'm about to roll the thing off of a cliff!

Where did you get your replacement carb? New or rebuilt? I ask because I had similar issues that ended up being due to a clogged fuel passage in the carburetor. Apparently, when I rebuilt the carb, I forgot to blow out one of the fuel passages or didn't blow it out well enough. The clogged passage was for the secondary, so when I pushed the gas pedal down far enough to open the secondary it was starved for fuel. It would lose power, buck, almost die and would come right back to life as soon as I let up on the gas.

I checked my timing earlier, and it was on for timing, but it would advance in chunks, hence the new advance mechanism. I had it tested, and testing showed one bad diaphragm in it. Other than that the timing was on as far as I could tell.
The carb came from a guy in town who has previously used it, and according to him, it worked well. Not for me though. I will have to try to look into that. Where is the passage that you blew out, scottd? And do I have to pull the carb again to do it?

The filter I pulled when I first got the truck was dirty, but wasn't full of rust(at least I'm fairly sure it wasn't) I'm wondering why it seems like the mixture is off at high throttle application. i can't tell if it's lean or rich and when I mess with the screws, it seems like not much happens.

I had the same problem with mine at high throttle/rpms. The truck would just start cutting cutting out until I let off the throttle. As soon as I replaced the filter it ran like a champ. I have to replace my filter occationally. Today I had problems at high rpms again - replaced the filter and it's all good. You might check the filter again. Could be as simple as that. The only permanant solution I have is to pull the tank and have it sand blasted. When I first bought my truck I pulled the tank and fuel gage and the tank was full of rust and the gage was rusted. I just cleaned it out the best I could.

hmmm, as soon as I can i think I'm going to pull the carb and soak it. The guy that I bought the carb from said it fan fine in his truck and he lives in Ft Collins as well, the air cleaner is new(along with most of the stuff that bolts to the engine) I just can't seem to figure it out, I checked the timing and that was on. How do you guys keep your spark plug wires away from everything?

I buy nothing but factory Toyota spark plug wires. Cost is a bit high at 68.00 but they come all nice and neat with connectors/holders and they are the EXACT length needed. Just attach as they come out of the package.
I second the need for a complete cleaning of the carb. You are not getting enough fuel for sure. First, check the easy stuff like filters and lines etc..

fyre and water, I would watch your gas tank like a hawk. I had the same issue, was going through fuel filters alot, but then the rust made it past the filter and screwed up my fuel pump and carburetor

I've already rebuilt the carb once. I think I'm ok now. When I bought the truck it had been sitting alot and I think that's what started the rust. Fuel filters are cheap and I replace them no matter what every 10,000 or so. It's kind of funny since the only and I mean only rust that I have on my 130,000 mile toy is in the gas tank. It's a serious benefit owning a truck that's spent its whole life in CO.
