what are these parts (rear axle)

Question what are these parts (rear axle)

cleaned rear axle, removed "shields"? to spray inside of housing with brakeclean, lots of metal in there, not good!

interesting--I just looked through the Rear axle chapter of my FSM for my '81 and did not see those--of course they could have made a change by '83..
Where exactly were they? obviously not any load bearing place...

They are baffles to keep the gear lube from running quickly to one side or the other when on a slope.

they are stuffed inside the alxle tubes .. pumpkin side .. you have to remove the 3rd to see them ..

I removed both thirds from the axles and when the money permits I'll be sending them to zuk http://www.gearinstalls.com/ for some TLC.
I might run 33's or 35's, I haven't decided yet.
