I'm sorta lookin into putting a larger engine into my 82. i have heard the 1995.5-2003 toyota V6 EFI engines drop right in but are not very good. i've heard putting a V8 in can cost up to $10,000. right now its my stock 22r engine with a propane kit. it runs great but i'm lookin into more power. what do you all think?

3.4L v6 5vz(f)e (1995-2003) is IMO the best you can do. Its got better power than 22r but with still decent mileage.

yeah the motor your talking about is one of the best toyota motors and V6's in general ever made... but its much harder to swap in a 3.4 than it would be to do say a 4.3L vortec or a TBI small block chevy, et.

3.4L and 4.0L Toyota V6's are both awesome engines...
but i have to say my vote goes to 4BT! (cummins 4cyl)
but i'm somewhat partial to diesels...

I would go with a 2.7 Tacoma 4 banger too...about 150 hp stock. kind of looking for a totaled truck so I have all the crap I would need for the conversion (with the exception of the bellhousing) Marlin Crawler's Red 1st Gen has the 2.7 in it...

how bout superchargers? i'm not experienced at all with workin on superchargers or turbo's so how hard would it be for me to install a supercharger?

installing a supercharger is quite simple...in about 3 hours or so it could be completed..i did a friends 3.4 with a 7th injector...that truck is fast

The kit from LC Engineering for the 22R is over $3000 if I remember right.

A V8 swap can be done cheap, or expensive. Personally id go with a for 302 but a Chevy 350 is a common swap too, you will need the motor and trans, then you buy an adapter to adapt the Toyota t-case to the v8 tranny, usually an auto. You will need new motor mounts, and firewall modification if you want to keep the transfer case in the stock location, if not your looking at new driveshafts, a body lift works to help clear the engine aswell.

A Toyota swap is a bit more involved in the wiring aspect but less involved in fabrication of the firewall, motor mounts and other misc things that you would run into with a V8 or other brand transplant.


Personally id just keep the 22R and get a Weber carb, RV cam and a Header, it really helps and its your cheapest option I think.

personaly i would loose the propane conversion, ya sure its somwhat enviromentaly friendly but it not letting your motor run at its peak performance

when i had the propane kit installed there was no noticable change in power. the 4:88 gears helped out but my intrest is in a V6 tacoma engine. or i'll just leave my engine the way it is, have a sweet lifted yota, and buy a sports car or street bike for my power fix. i'm still looking around and thinkin about my options.

if your really interested in the tacoma motor swap i have a few connections locally that can get you a 3.4L longblock for very very cheap, and if its still there i know of a donor truck in a junkyard in terrabone that has all the wiring and accessories aswell.
