Umm...huh?

You're pulling the tranny? You don't mean won't come out of gear? If the d-shafts are all removed, wires unplugged, shifters removed, and all bolts removed, it should come out just fine. Brain is a little tired so forgive me...but does the slave cylinder bolt to the bellhousing or engine? That could hold things up. Anyways it's hard to say from this end, because we don't know if you've got everything removed.

Somebody put a 4 speed in your truck, eh?

Glad you got it, but I bet you were a little sorry when you did!!
Suckers weigh 987 pounds!!
Last time I took mine out it tried to kill me! heheheeeeee
And hey you got the pilot bearing out! They are usually miserable trying to get out.
Sorry about your bell housing.

Mine's a 5 speed and with the transfer case on it weighs about what a honda car weighs altogether!! And a lopsided top heavy monster it is too!
First time I ever had mine out.........I built a little carriage for my floor jack and rolling it out all nice and polite and kahhhhhwhumpa!
Sucker turned turtle in a heartbeat..... carriage, jack and all!
Me, squeezed under the truck on stands like that... barely got away!
Life of a shadetree mechanic..heh

Found a better balance point from then on.
yours Scott

I never had much luck with transmision jacks it seems like it wastes too much time getting it set up properly. I'll try it by hand first, resting it on my chest first then lifting it into place, If it dosen't go in right away something is wrong and I'll get a jack.
Pick up transmissions and transfer cases don't come close to what they weigh from a land Cruiser or a full size truck.

Am I the only one who thinks 83's came with 5 speeds?? Mines about as stripped down as they come and it has a 5 speed.

Glad you got it out.

I tried the bench pressing method to get mine back in, but even with the t-case off, it wasn't happening...even with a friend! I guess we're wimps. Or just don't really know what we're doing (pretty likely).

no you aren't...more than likely someone had swapped a 4 speed into the 83 earlier...

Thanks. Right, you never know, but it seems to be the common wisdom that by '83, 4 speeds were no longer available. Doesn't matter though, that's not his question..

I have a 5 speed out of an '83 and a doubled t-case. i have found a rolling floor jack with an extremely wide wheel-base and a larger lifting platform with chains. it starts its lift at about four inches and goes up to 22". with my lift i've had no issues lifting and dropping both trans and TC safely. Unfourtunately i got it used and there is no stickers for make. I have found a similar one in the catalog at the local auto supply shop, but it was over $1100 Canadian.

I've got an '83 2WD that came stock with an automatic (3 speed with overdrive... so 4 speed I guess?). Only seen one other '83 2WD that came with an auto, and really can't find much online about it. I think they're pretty rare.
