transmission or engine squeal? knocking during turns too
#1
Lately my truck has been squealing loudly at idle...It sounds exactly like a typical engine belt squeal but it's coming from the area where the transmission and engine mate up.
The noise does NOT increase/decrease with vehicle speed, clutch movement, or specific gears. It's pretty much constant. If I lift my foot off the gas it will come back, but will disappear when I depress the pedal again (under load).
Another factor is that it only occurs when the truck is warm. When I leave for work it won't start squealing until I'm almost there. When I leave work, it will start squealing immediately after it's been sitting in the sun all day.
Coincidently when I turn corners there is a CLUNK sound that I cannot identify. I can only reproduce it while driving but it "sounds" like it's coming from the front-driver side axle area.
I'm going to take a close look at my engine and driveline mounts, but the squealing noise has me totally stumped. Any ideas? I can provide more information if needed.
Thank you all!

After investing in a stethoscope and probe from NAPA I found out the sound isn't coming from the transmission/engine at all. . . it's my Weber 32/36 whistling. I tightened everything I could reach from the outside but it's still screaming when it warms up. Obviously there is air being sucked in somewhere... but where?! Could be a good time to re-build anyway.

Yep. Tried that months ago. There are several spots, from carb, the carb base to manifold... Maybe the WD will make the squeal stop when I hit that spot. If not, I guess it could be internal. A needle which is loose perhaps?

I found it...a nice size gap at the mounting plate. That stethoscope is definitely one of those "why didn't I buy this 10 years ago?" type of tools.
Im going to buy a one-piece plate and re-mount the carb.
Now if I can figure out that clunking noise while turning. . . ?

the clunking does it happen more turning right or left or is it the same either way?
i ask as i had clunking when turning from a worn out center link in the steering the tierod ends might also be a cause

seems to happen when I turn, then start to turn back driving on winding roads. There is so much under there to check I'm not sure where to even begin!
I can feel it in the floor when it happens and it sounds like a baseball rolling gently back and forth in the truck bed. I DID check for something under the seat - nothing found

jack up the front end on stands so the front end is hanging limp you can then check the ball joints (tug on the bottom of the wheel outward) if it moves out its worn.
push the wheel right an left if theres any clunk or movement without the other wheel moving as well youve got worn out parts in the system and this will also show if something is binding up or hitting (look for shiny spots) on the steering components
